Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Caleb Stewart hit the first grand slam of the year for the Binghamton Mets, who beat the Connecticut Defenders 5-2 at NYSEG Stadium Wednesday. Binghamton has won four in a row and six of their last seven.
The game began as a pitchers' duel between Binghamton's Marcos Carvajal and Connecticut's Nick Pereira. Pereira departed after five shutout innings. Carvajal, who retired the first 11 in a row, ran into trouble in the seventh, allowing back-to-back singles to Eddy Martinez-Esteve and Patrick Dobson. On came Joe Serfass (3-0), who yielded an infield hit to Todd Jennings, loading the bases for pinch-hitter Steve Holm. Holm hit the first pitch he saw to Mark Kiger, who stepped on the third-base bag, threw to Wilson Batista for the out at second and onto Brett Harper at first for the triple play, ending the inning.
Binghamton (19-23) loaded the bases with one out in the seventh on three straight singles by Corey Coles, Batista and Fernando Martinez. Up came Stewart, who hit an 0-2 pitch from Justin Hedrick (1-2) over the leftfield fence for a 4-0 B-Mets lead. Binghamton tacked on another in the eighth when Coles reached with his fourth hit of the night, moved to second on Batista's groundout and scored on Martinez's single to left.
Connecticut (18-24) scored the game's final two runs in the ninth on back-to-back RBI hits by Jake Wald and Martinez-Esteve.
Thursday, the B-Mets wrap up their three-game series with the Connecticut Defenders. Salvador Aguilar (0-1, 7.24) will start for the B-Mets against Darren Sack (2-3, 5.85) of Connecticut. Game time is 10:35 from NYSEG Stadium with the radio broadcast starting at 10:20 on ESPN 1360 WYOS.
Notes: the triple play is the second in team history, with the other coming 5/3/1999 @ New Haven...Coles joins Stewart (5/13 @ POR) as the only B-Mets with four-hit games this year...Stewart's grand slam is Binghamton's first since Jay Caligiuri hit one 7/23/06 @ POR/2, in support of Miguel Piñango's no-hitter.
