Erie SeaWolves News Release
Baseball games are never over until out number 27 is recorded, and this was evident on Wednesday night as the SeaWolves took a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth, only to fall in 10 innings to the Harrisburg Senators 8-7.
Jon Connolly pitched an absolute gem for the SeaWolves going 8.2 innings allowing four runs on eight hits (all four runs and four of the eight hits in the ninth). Connolly stuck out a season-high nine batters and did not allow a walk in taking a no-decision.
Erie got on the board in the top of the second inning. Mike Hollimon tripled with two outs and would score on an infield single by Steve Torrealba for a 1-0 lead. The triple for Hollimon was his fourth on the year and he extended the SeaWolves league-high in triples to 18.
The 'Wolves would add three more in the top of the sixth. Andres Torres led off the inning with his third home run of the season. The solo-shot put Erie up 2-0. Jeff Larish followed with a single and an error in left got Larish to third. Larish would score on an Almote base hit for a 3-0 'Wolves lead. Kody Kirkland capped off the Erie sixth with a solo home run, his third of the year for a 4-0 advantage.
Erie took a four-run lead into the ninth and they were not done scoring. Kirkland led off with a single, his second hit of the game. Kirkland got to second on a wild pitch and he scored on a Jackson Melian base hit for a 5-0 lead. Steve Torrealba singled to put runners on first and second. Torres would come through with his second hit of the game scoring Melian from third for a 6-0 lead. Torres would score on a wild pitch for a 7-0 Erie lead.
With the SeaWolves looking comfortable ahead into the bottom of the ninth. Connolly struck out Juan Melo for the first out. Brandon Larson followed with a one-out single and Christian Guerrero hit a home run over the wall in center, cutting the lead to 7-2. Guerrero now has three home runs in the series. Dan Dement singled to put a runner on base. Connolly then stuck out Tony Blanco for the second out in the ninth but yielded a single to Melvin Dorta, his third hit of the game and Connolly left the game for Kyle Sleeth. Sleeth walked Josh Whitesell to load the bases. Dement scored with the bases loaded on a wild pitch, cutting the lead down to 7-3. With runners on second and third, Roger Bernadina singled home a run making it 7-4 Erie. Frank Diaz then came to the plate and doubled off the wall in right bringing home two more runs, making it a one-run game at 7-6. Melo, who started the inning by striking out, singled home Diaz, tying the game at 7-7.
In the bottom of the 10th, Guerrero led off with a single. A sacrifice bunt by Dement moved Guerrero into scoring position. After a wild pitch by Kevin Ardoin moved Guerrero to third, Dorta hit a sacrifice-fly to right, scoring Guerrero for the game-winning run.
The seven runs is the largest lead the 'Wolves have given up the season and the team has now dropped three in a row to the Senators. Erie has lost all three in the Senators final at bat of the game.
The two teams meet in the final game of the five-game set on Thursday afternoon...12:05 first pitch. LHP Andrew Miller (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his second start of the season for Erie and he will be opposed by RHP Jim Magrane (1-3, 5.79 ERA).
