Akron RubberDucks News Release
TRENTON, NJ - The Akron Aeros stole a season-high five bases as they went on to sweep the Trenton Thunder in a three-game series winning the finale 7-4 Thursday at Waterfront Park.
Akron (58-54) also stole five bases May 11 at Erie. Three of those five bases were stolen by Juan Diaz, which is a 2011 high.
Right-handed pitcher Paolo Espino recorded the win for the Aeros tossing five scoreless innings, scattering four hits and striking out six while walking none. Right-hander Tyler Sturdevant got the last three outs to earn the save.
Left-handed pitcher Shaeffer Hall suffered the loss for Trenton pitching 5.2 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and striking out three while walking none.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Chun Chen hit a two-run home run to give the Aeros a 2-0 lead.
Akron added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning. Diaz opened the frame with a single and stole second when Chen struck out. With Raul Padron at the plate, Diaz stole third. Following a Padron strike out, Kyle Bellows singled Diaz home to increase the Aeros lead to 3-0. Bellows quickly stole second to move into scoring position. Nick Weglarz doubled him home to make it 4-0. Trenton's Brad Halsey replaced Hall following the double and, with two outs and Weglarz on third, uncorked a wild pitch to make it 5-0. Later in the frame, Jordan Henry gave the Aeros a 6-0 lead on an RBI single.
The Thunder (57-54) got two runs back in the bottom of the frame on a Damon Sublett two-RBI double to cut the lead to 6-2.
Trenton scored runs in each of the next two innings, but that was as close as they would get as Akron added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning and went on to the win.
The Aeros will begin a three-game home series against the New Britain Rock Cats on Friday. Akron will give the ball to left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland, who is 7-6 with a 4.09 ERA in 2011. New Britain has yet to announce a starter for Friday's game. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on Fox Sports 1350 AM or online at sportsradio1350.com. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m.
Friday's game will feature Golfers' Paradise Fireworks presented by KeyBank. Aeros fans will "hit the links" with a night full of fun for the golfer in all of us. Special golf contests and giveaways will occur throughout the night. And of course, a fantastic fireworks show will follow the game.
There will also be a Mystery Ball Auction. Take your shot at buying an MLB or MiLB autograph. One catch - you won't know what you've got until you open the bag. We'll have a Minor League table ($10 per bag) and a Major League table ($20 per bag) so try your luck with over 90 autographed items!
