Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - Austin Krum had four hits in his return to Trenton on Thursday afternoon, but the Akron Aeros (58-54) beat the Thunder (57-54) 7-4 to complete a three-game sweep at Waterfront Park. The Aeros used a four-run sixth inning to chase Thunder starter Shaeffer Hall and grab a commanding lead that was too much for Trenton to overcome. Damon Sublett also drove in two runs for the Thunder, who complete a 1-6 homestand at Waterfront Park. The defeat also drops the Thunder to 4.5 games out of first place in the Eastern League's Eastern Division and 1.0 game out of the Wild Card spot.
Entering the top of the sixth inning with a 2-0 lead, the Aeros scored four times to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Thunder starter Shaeffer Hall was chased from the game after a run-scoring single and double, both of which occurred with two outs. Brad Halsey took over for Hall, allowing an inherited run to score on a wild pitch and his own run on an RBI-single by Jordan Henry.
Trailing 6-0 after six and a half frames, the Thunder then began to chip away at the lead. Damon Sublett provided the Thunder with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 6-2. Trenton then scored a run in each of the next two frames, on an RBI-groundout from Zoilo Almonte and an RBI-single from Austin Krum. After eight frames, the Thunder trailed by just two runs, 6-4.
The Aeros scored an important insurance run in the top of the ninth inning off of Cory Arbiso, but the Thunder threatened in the bottom of the ninth. A single and two walks loaded the bases with one out, but Jose Pirela lined out and Jose Gil grounded out, both to shortstop, to complete the win and the three-game sweep for the Akron Aeros.
The Thunder will begin a brief three-game series with Altoona at Blair County Ballpark on Friday night at 7:00 PM. The Thunder will send LHP Steve Garrison (3-7, 6.43) to the mound, while the Curve will counter with RHP Kyle McPherson (5-3, 2.88). The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Hank Fuerst and Ben Youngerman begins at 6:45 PM. Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR and online at trentonthunder.com.
