Altoona Can't Complete Sweep with Loss to B-Mets

CURVE, Pa. - A three-run sixth inning spoiled a potential series sweep for the Curve as Binghamton swiped the final game of the three-game set, 3-0, on Thursday night at Blair County Ballpark. Starter Mike Colla tossed five scoreless innings but did not factor into the decision in the loss for the Curve.
It was a pitcher's duel from the get-go on Thursday evening as Colla and prospect-pitcher Matt Harvey (1-3) traded zeroes on the scoreboard for the first five innings. Both starters ran into early trouble in the first but both would evade damage as each of them went on to finish five scoreless innings. Colla struck out four and walked one over his five innings of scoreless work.
All the scoring in the game was done in the sixth when Tim Alderson (0-3) came in to relieve Colla and things started well with Alderson retiring Allan Dykstra on a fly ball to right. From there, Binghamton had five straight hits off the Scottsdale, Ariz. native and scored all three of its runs to take a 3-0 lead. RBI hits in the frame came from Eric Campbell and Kai Gronauer to put the B-Mets in front. Alderson walked Matt den Dekker to load the bases and end his outing.
Aaron Thompson was called in for the tough spot with the bases loaded and one down and he struck out Jordany Valdespin and Juan Lagares to end the inning.
Ricky Brooks relieved Harvey in the sixth and was superb out of the bullpen. He did not allow a Curve base runner in his three innings of work and struck out three before turning it over to Josh Stinson in the ninth. Stinson, who struggled in the rain on Wednesday night, walked just one while converting on his first save of the year for Binghamton.
Starling Marte extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the third while Quincy Latimore and Brock Holt had the other two hits in the game for Altoona. Both Andrew Lambo and Yunesky Sanchez were held hitless on Thursday night to end their respective hitting streaks at six games. Altoona did not have a hit after the third inning.
Bryan Morris tossed a clean eighth inning in the loss for Altoona. Despite the loss, Altoona still secured its first home-series victory since mid-June.
Having won two-of-three to start the homestand, Altoona (48-62) will welcome the Trenton Thunder, affiliates of the New York Yankees, to BCB at 7 p.m. on Friday night. Friday night will be a Freebie Friday in Curve, Pa. with the first 1,000 fans receiving a Rudy Owens Perm Hat thanks to the Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association. Kids will also be able to run around the bases after the game.
RHP Kyle McPherson (5-3, 2.88) trots to the hill for his first start in the month of August after a superb July that saw him go 4-1 with a 2.60 ERA In six starts. He'll be opposed by Trenton's LHP Steve Garrison (3-7, 6.43) in the lid lifter at BCB.
