Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (62-49) completed a three-game sweep of the Richmond Flying Squirrels (60-51) with a, 4-2, victory in front of 7,326 at The Diamond on Thursday night.
After two scoreless innings, a two-out walk from Squirrels' left-hander Eric Surkamp got the Fisher Cats started in the third. Anthony Gose followed the walk to Adeiny Hechavarria with a double chopped over the head of first baseman Wes Hodges. Roger Kieschnick threw to second base attempting to cut down Gose, and Hechavarria scampered in for a 1-0 lead. Surkamp then struck out Travis d'Arnaud, but strike three was a passed ball that allowed the inning to continue. Danny Perales sent another chopper over Hodges at first base, the single plating Gose for a 2-0 advantage.
Wendell Fairley opened the Richmond third and cracked a triple off the wall in right-center field off of New Hampshire right-hander Chad Jenkins. Skyler Stromsmoe followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, trimming the Fisher Cats' lead to a lone run, 2-1.
The Fisher Cats were sparked in the fifth by an inning-opening double to left-center field from Jonathan Diaz. Gose singled Diaz to third base, and he scored for a 3-1 cushion on an opposite-field single into right field from d'Arnaud.
Jenkins (4-4) ultimately turned in six strong innings for the win, his fourth of the season. He allowed just the lone run on three hits. Working economically, he walked one and struck out two. Surkamp (8-4) worked into the seventh inning, taking his fourth loss of the season over 6 2/3 innings. He allowed three runs - two earned - on six hits. He walked three and struck out seven.
New Hampshire used three hurlers - each working an inning - to close out the victory. Left-hander Frank Gailey entered in the seventh inning and permitted a lead-off home run to Hodges that cut the Squirrels' deficit to a lone run. However, Gailey recovered to strike out the next three hitters. Right-hander Matt Daly worked the eighth, and left-hander Evan Crawford closed the door in the ninth, earning his second save of the season.
The Fisher Cats capped the scoring with a final tally in the top of the ninth inning against right-hander Mitch Lively. Diaz brought in John Tolisano with an RBI single for a 4-2 final margin.
The Squirrels open a three-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) at 7:05 PM on Friday night at The Diamond. RHP Daryl Maday (2-10, 4.94) will make the start for the Squirrels against RHP Chris Balcom-Miller (2-4, 4.50) for the Sea Dogs. For tickets or more information, log on to SquirrelsBaseball.com.
