Sea Dogs Score Three in 9th Inning to Beat Baysox 3-2

Bowie, Maryland- The Portland Sea Dogs rallied in the ninth inning once again, beating the Bowie Baysox 3-2 on Thursday. The Sea Dogs offense had managed just four hits going into the final frame and trailed 2-0, but came back to pick up their second straight win in their final at-bat by scoring three runs in the ninth. Pat Egan (0-2) gave up all three runs in the ninth. Junichi Tazawa (3-2) closed the door on Bowie to earn his second win of the season.
The late rally started with a leadoff walk to Alex Hassan. After a Mark Wagner fly out, Jon Hee ripped a base hit to right field, then advanced to second when the throw in came towards first base. Matt Spring drove in Hassan with a bloop single. Then, Mitch Dening lofted a fly ball over the head of L.J Hoes in left field that stuck under the fence for a ground-rule RBI double that tied the game.
After Egan intentionally walked Dan Butler to load the bases, Wynn Pelzer came in to replace Egan. Heiker Meneses grounded into a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning. After falling behind to Jeremy Hazelbaker, Pelzer missed with a 3-2 pitch to bring in the go-ahead run on the bases-loaded walk. Ryan Khoury grounded out to end the inning, but the damage had already been done.
Bowie got a run each against Brock Huntzinger in the first two innings. Joe Mahoney doubled in Hoes after a two-out walk in the first inning. In the second, a one-out walk and a double put two runners in scoring position for Ronnie Welty. The rightfielder grounded out to the shortstop, but Steve Lerud managed to score on the play. That would be all Huntzinger would give up over six innings. He matched a career-high with nine strikeouts on the day.
That appeared to be enough for Oliver Drake who confounded the best hitting team in the Eastern League for much of the game. The Massachusetts native pitched into the eighth inning surrendering just four hits and no runs. Drake allowed multiple baserunners in an inning just once. Khoury singled with one out in the fourth. Then, Hassan grounded into a fielder's choice and moved up to second on a passed ball. Wagner walked to put runners on first and second for Will Middlebrooks.
The Portland third baseman got into a one strike count after fouling a ball off his ankle. Middlebrooks tried to walk it off before getting back into the batter's box. After another swing and miss he was forced to leave the game. Hee replaced him and struck out to end the inning.
The Sea Dogs start the second leg of their road trip tomorrow night with the first of three games against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. After Sunday's finale, Portland returns to Hadlock Field for the start of a six-game homestand. The ZOOperstars will be in town for their second and final visit to Portland this year on August 9th.
