Diaz Has Two Hits as Fisher Cats Complete Sweep

(Richmond, VA)-Jonathan Diaz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as the Fisher Cats completed a sweep of Richmond with a 4-2 win over the Flying Squirrels on Thursday night at The Diamond.

With the win, the Fisher Cats improve to 62-49, extending its lead in the Eastern Division to four games over second place Reading. New Hampshire has the best record in the Eastern League.

Chad Jenkins (4-4) picked up his second consecutive win, allowing Richmond one run on three hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out three. New Hampshire's bullpen had another solid night. Frank Gailey allowed a lead-off homer in the seventh to Wes Hodges, but came back to strike out the side. Matt Daly worked a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts. Evan Crawford allowed a lead-off double to Roger Kieschnick before retiring the next three batters for his second save.

The Fisher Cats opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the third inning. Adeiny Hechavarria walked and scored on a double by Anthony Gose to make it 1-0. Gose went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Danny Perales.

Richmond (60-51) LF Wendell Fairley led off the bottom of the third with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Skyler Stromsmoe to cut the New Hampshire lead to 2-1.

In the top of the fifth inning, Diaz doubled and moved to third on a single by Gose. Travis d'Arnaud singled to right to score Diaz and make the score 3-1.

The Fisher Cats added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning to up the lead to 4-2 with three consecutive singles by John Tolisano, Yan Gomes and Diaz.

Richmond starter Eric Surkamp (8-4) worked 6.2 innings, allowing six hits and three runs. The EL's strikeout leader had seven in the game.

The Fisher Cats continue the roadtrip on Friday night at 7:05pm in Bowie, Maryland. RHP Henderson Alvarez (7-4, 2.82) starts for New Hampshire and radio coverage with Bob Lipman begins at 6:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.
