Harvey, B-Mets Salvage Finale with 3-0 Shutout

ALTOONA, PA - Matt Harvey hurled five, scoreless innings and combined on a three-hit shutout with Ricky Brooks and Josh Stinson to send Binghamton past Altoona 3-0 at Blair County Ballpark Thursday night. Kai Gronauer extended his modest hitting streak to four games with a 2-for-3 showing including two RBI.

Harvey and Curve starter Michael Colla matched each other inning for inning through five frames at which point both departed. Colla, who has not won since May 28th, allowed four hits and struck out four over five, strong innings, but took a no-decision. Harvey limited Altoona to just three hits and struck out four in his five-inning stint.

Binghamton (45-67) would not let Harvey leave empty-handed, however. Tim Alderson entered in relief of Colla in the sixth and unraveled after getting the first out. Mike Fisher started the rally with an opposite-field single to left. Raul Reyes joined him on base with a single to right. Eric Campbell followed and got the B-Mets on the board with a bloop double to right which plated Fisher. With two men in scoring position and one out, the Curve brought the infield in. The move backfired as Gronauer lofted a hunchback liner over first for a single to clear the bases and put Binghamton ahead 3-0.

The run support was plenty for the B-Mets bullpen, which was practically flawless the rest of the way. Brooks retired all nine batters he faced over three, perfect innings with three strikeouts and Stinson, a night removed from blowing his first save chance, worked the ninth for his first save.

Altoona (48-62) missed out on a chance for its first sweep of the season with the loss. Alderson was hung with the decision, his third setback of the year. He was charged with three runs on five hits in just a third of an inning.

The B-Mets outhit the Curve 12-3 and featured four hitters with two-hit performances to provide Harvey with his first Double-A win.

Binghamton, which has played 14 of its last 17 games on the road, returns home Friday night for a 7:05 PM meeting with the Reading Phillies. RHP Brandon Moore (8-7, 3.89) will start opposite RHP J.C. Ramirez (8-11, 4.34). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
