Milwaukee, WI-- Robert Dietrich's overtime goal made the Milwaukee Admirals 7-6 winners over the Chicago Wolves Saturday night at the Bradley Center in game six of the Amtrak Rivalry Series between the two teams. The wildly entertaining contest saw 24 different players between the two teams record at least a point and both starting goalies run from the game.
Defensemen Dietrich and Jon Blum each registered two markers for Milwaukee and forward Mike Santorelli added four helpers to the Admirals cause.
Before the season-high crowd of 15,101 fans even had time to settle into their seats Brett Sterling scored his AHL leading 34th goal of the year to give Chicago an early 1-0 lead. Sterling received a pass near center ice, skated into the Admirals zone and unleashed a wrist shot past Chet Pickard's glove.
Milwaukee started their scoring campaign just over five minutes later when Hugh Jessiman knotted the score at one. The play started way back in the Admirals' zone when Pickard dished the puck to Blum in the near corner. Blum sent the puck cross-ice where Jessiman corralled it, marched into the zone and slid the puck past the diving Chicago goalie Peter Mannino.
The high-scoring first period continued when Jamie Hunt tipped a slap shot off the post and into the net to put the Wolves ahead 2-1.
Dietrich answered by scoring his first goal of the game with nearly five minutes to play in the opening frame. Scott Ford moved the puck to Mike Santorelli at the far hash marks and with a Chicago forward charging hard, Santorelli passed the puck to Dietrich who unleashed a slapper that beat Mannino, sending his water bottle flying into the corner.
Less than a minute later the Admirals took their first lead of the game on Blum's first tally of the night. Reid Cashman moved the puck to Colin Wilson who exploded through the neutral zone and stopped hard at the top of the circles. Wilson dished the puck to Blum as he slid into the zone and ripped a shot past Mannino to make the score 3-2.
The Ads started the second period the same way they ended the first. Three minutes into the period Mark Santorelli sailed into the Chicago zone and moved the puck to Reid Cashman who was calling for it in the high slot. Cashman wristed one past Mannino who was pulled immediately after.
Following Milwaukee's offensive outburst, the Wolves took their turn on the attack, scoring three goals in two and a half minutes to take a 5-4 lead and take starting goalie Chet Pickard out of the game.
After 20 minutes of scoreless hockey the Admirals struck again. Nick Spaling won a battle to the corner and pushed the puck to Mike Santorelli who dished the puck to Andreas Thuresson. Thuresson was wide open in the slot and unloaded a one timer past new net minder Drew MacIntyre to tie the game at five.
With just under four minutes to play Blum registered a power play marker that gave Milwaukee a 6-5 lead. Dietrich passed the puck to Mike Santorelli who faked a slapshot then dropped the puck back to Blum. Blum unloaded, sending a shot past a helpless MacIntyre.
Blum's tally appeared to be the game winner, but with just 7 seconds remaining and Wacey Rabbit in the penalty box for interference Tim Stapleton sent the game to overtime when he put a rebound past a diving Mark Dekanich.
The Admirals got their own opportunity on the power play with the game on the line when Sterling went to the box for holding midway through the extra frame. With the man advantage Mike Santorelli sent the puck to Wilson high in the slot. Wilson one-timed the puck to Dietrich who didn't hesitate to blast a slapper past MacIntyre, giving the Admirals a thrilling 7-6 win.
Dekanich, the only goaltender of the game to not give up multiple goals, stepped in for Pickard and turned away 14 of 15 shots.
