PORTLAND, ME - Derek Whitmore scored two goals, including the second period game winner, as the Portland Pirates defeated the Albany River Rats 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Albany trailed 3-0 after two periods, but Jerome Samson scored his team-leading 27th goal of the season just 33 seconds into the third period and Chris Terry made it a one goal game at 13:44 with his 12th of the year. The River Rats out-shot Portland 14-3 in the final frame and looked certain to knot the contest, but Whitmore's second goal of the night halted Albany's momentum at 15:22.

Veteran goaltender Mike Morrison turned in a scoreless first period in his second career start as a River Rat, but Portland scored three goals in the second stanza to take control of the game. Kyle Rank drew first blood at 2:55 with a shot from the right faceoff circle and Brad Larsen doubled Portland's lead less than three minutes later on a rebound put-away. Whitmore scored the eventual game-winner on the power play at 18:44, deflecting Mike Kostka's shot over Morrison's shoulder for a 3-0 Pirates lead.

Portland goalie J.P. Lamoureux stopped 28-of-30 shots faced in the contest to earn the win, as the Pirates improved to 35-18-5-3 this season. Morrison allowed four goals on 22 shots faced and took the lass, as Albany fell to 32-24-3-3 this year. The River Rats out-shot Portland 30-22 in the game and went 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Pirates were 1-for-4 on the man-advantage.
