Hershey Bears News Release

Last Week: The BEARS traveled to Providence for the fourth and final meeting of the season with the Bruins and lost 3-2 at Dunkin Donuts Center Friday night. Former HERSHEY forward Matt Herr scored his second goal of the game with just 40 seconds left in regulation to give Providence the victory. Brett Clark and Shane Willis scored goals on Friday in the losing effort. Saturday night found the BEARS in Worcester against the Icecats, and HERSHEY dropped a 5-2 decision at Worcester's Centrum Center. Cody McCormick scored a short-handed goal in the first period, and Steve Brule scored his 25th goal of the season to provide the offense. Peter Budaj allowed three goals in the third period to absorb the loss. Sunday, the BEARS played at Lowell against the Lock Monsters for only the third time in team history. Lowell edged HERSHEY 5-4 on a late third period goal by Brett Lysak. The BEARS battled back from a three goal deficit in the second period to tie the game, only to lose in the third. Gavin Morgan was named the game's number two star for scoring two goals. Shane Willis and Steve Brule added goals on Sunday at Tsongas Arena as well. With the three losses, HERSHEY stands in fourth place in the East Division with 68 points, just one point back of third place Norfolk but just four points ahead of sixth place Binghamton in a tight divisional race.

Notables: Cody McCormick's short-handed goal Saturday night was the first scored by HERSHEY since February 4th. Darren Rumble scored a shorty that night against the Albany River Rats at GIANT Center. The BEARS picked up a season high 83 penalty minutes on Sunday in Lowell against the Lock Monsters. The two teams combined for 118 penalty minutes Sunday, which also was a HERSHEY season high. After going unbeaten in eight straight games against the Atlantic Division from the start of the season, the BEARS have now lost five in a row against Atlantic competition. HERSHEY also has lost five straight road games, a season high. Mark Jerant was recalled from Elmira (UHL) in time for Sunday's game at Lowell. Jerant had been assigned Wednesday to the United Hockey League club after practice Pascal Trepanier is second in the AHL in scoring among defenseman with 38 points starting the week. Eric Perrin is tied with Cleveland's Miroslav Zalesak for the league lead in scoring with 68 points. Zalesak was recalled to the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. Dennis Bonvie is fourth in the AHL in penalty minutes with 247. He trails Philadelphia's Peter Vandermeer (338), former Binghamton teammate Brian McGrattan (284) and Springfield's Trevor Gillies (268)

Colorado Update: The Avalanche begin the week one point ahead of Vancouver for the Northwest Division lead, but are coming off the worst home loss in team history on Sunday. Colorado lost 7-1 to Calgary at Pepsi Center on Sunday afternoon, with former BEARS goaltender Phil Sauve allowing all seven goals. The Avs are now 2-6-2-1 in their last ten games, and just 1-5-3-1 in the last ten home games. Tony Granato's team faces a critical road game tonight in Vancouver against the Canucks to begin a three game road trip. The Avalanche will also travel to Edmonton for a game on Wednesday night before traveling to Phoenix to face the Coyotes.

Tampa Bay Update: It just keeps getting better for Tampa Bay, who have now won eight straight games after a 5-3 win at Florida Saturday night. The Bolts now have 90 points, the top total in the Eastern Conference and all the National Hockey League. Tampa leads second place Florida by a whopping 25 points. Martin St. Louis was named the NHL's offensive player of the month for February, after winning the same award in January. He's the first NHL player to win back-to-back offensive player of the month awards since Wayne Gretzky in December 1986 and January 1987. Tampa plays tonight on the road at Detroit before playing Wednesday night at Carolina versus the Hurricanes. John Tortorella's team plays at home Friday against the New York Rangers and Saturday against Carolina.
