Houston Aeros vs. Grand Rapids Griffins, 3/8
Five things you absolutely need to know before reading any further –
· Houston and Cincinnati are the only teams with three wins this season against the league-leading Griffins. The Aeros can become the first team with four victories versus Grand Rapids tonight. Houston and San Antonio each won an AHL-high four games against the Griffins in 2002-03.
· Aeros centerman Mark Cullen posted three assists Saturday to not only tie a career high but also raise $150 for "Sunshine Kids", which helps children struck with cancer and their families. An anonymous donor is giving $100 per Cullen goal and $50 per assist to the group for the remainder of the season. Cullen had malignant melanoma last fall.
· Houston defenseman Zbynek Michalek has posted two of his three career multiple point games against Grand Rapids.
· Grand Rapids has outscored Houston 10-1 in the third period in their seven meetings.
· In the last seven home games, the Aeros are an impressive 8-of-36 (22.2 percent) on the power play.
Griffins at Aeros (Aeros trail all-time series 18-21-7-0, Aeros lead 10-8-5-0 at Houston)
· Tonight is the 47th all-time meeting between the teams – 24th in Houston.
· The Aeros are 4-9-0-0 in the last 13 regular-season meetings with Grand Rapids.
· This is the ninth of 10 meetings this season, with the final five games at Toyota Center. The teams wrap up the season series April 10.
· In the last 16 regular-season meetings, the Aeros have scored four or more goals twice – in a 6-3 decision April 5, 2003 and a 4-1 win at Toyota Center February 18.
· Grand Rapids is the only active AHL team that the Aeros have an overall losing record against.
· The loser in each of the last six meetings has scored either one goal or has been shut out.
· Last Friday, Tomas Kopecky scored early in the third period on the power play after Jiri Hudler tied the game with 22 seconds left in the second, as the Griffins beat the Aeros 3-1 at Toyota Center. Rickard Wallin scored his fourth goal in as many games and Kyle Kettles finished with 34 saves for the Aeros.
· In the Griffins' last trip to Houston last season, they escaped with a 5-4, double overtime victory in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals on May 19, 2003. The Aeros could have clinched the series in that game, but Stacy Roest scored at 6:35 of double overtime.

Last game – Johan Holmqvist made 24 saves for his third shutout of the season, Mark Cullen's three assists led to $150 for "Sunshine Kids" and five different Aeros scored, as Houston beat the Utah Grizzlies 5-0 at Toyota Center. Jeff Hoggan, Jason Beckett, Marc Cavosie, Kyle Wanvig and Chris Heid all scored for the Aeros. The biggest moment of the game may have come when a goal wasn't scored, however, as Aeros enforcer Derek Boogaard was stoned by Jason Bacashihua on a penalty shot in the third period. An anonymous donor, meanwhile, is giving "Sunshine Kids", an organization that aids children with cancer, $100 per Cullen goal and $50 per assist for the remainder of the season. Holmqvist made 11 saves in the first, eight in the second and five in the third for his ninth career shutout – second against Utah.
Scouting the Aeros – Houston, 3-1-1-0 in its last five, hopes to continue its march towards a Calder Cup playoff spot tonight against the AHL-leading Griffins, who qualified for the post-season Saturday. The Aeros continue to play without leading scorer Stephane Veilleux (12+26=38), who was recalled to Minnesota February 27. Rickard Wallin (14+17=31) joined Veilleux in Minnesota on Saturday. Defenseman Travis Roche (6+28=34) is the leading active scorer, seven ahead of Wallin and Kyle Wanvig (21+10=31), who has a team-best 21 goals. Last season's Calder Cup Most Valuable Player, goalie Johan Holmqvist, has played 51 of the team's first 66 games, going 19-24-6 with a 2.56 goals against average and three shutouts. Kyle Kettles is 3-7-5 with a 2.65 goals against average but has deserved a better fate. In 14 starts, the Aeros have scored 24 goals in front of the rookie netminder.
Scouting the Griffins – Grand Rapids leads the West Division and the entire American Hockey League with 86 points, and the Griffins became the first team to clinch a berth in the 2004 Calder Cup Playoffs Saturday. Grand Rapids is 2-1-0-0 on its four-game Texas road trip after holding on for a 2-1 victory over the Rampage in San Antonio on Saturday. Veteran Michel Picard (13+32=45) is the team's leading point man, three ahead of Nathan Robinson (21+21=42), who missed the three February meetings with Houston due to a groin injury suffered in the AHL Skills Competition, and exciting young prospect Jiri Hudler (13+29=42). The blueline, which has helped the Griffins to a third-place ranking in team defense, is led by the likes of veteran Travis Richards (2+17=19), Danny Groulx (6+11=17) and Anders Myrvolds (0+17=17), who was returned from Detroit Saturday. The story for Grand Rapids all season, though, has been the goaltending. Marc Lamothe returned from a month-long stay in Detroit on Saturday, improving to 19-12-5 with a 1.86 goals against average. Joey MacDonald, an undrafted netminder, picked up the slack with Lamothe in Motown and is currently 19-5-3 with a 1.87 goals against average and four shutouts, including one against the Aeros.
Aeros/Griffins connections –
· Griffins winger Derek King played for the New York Islanders in the 1987-88 season, when Aeros head coach Todd McLellan suited up for his only five NHL games. They also saw each other briefly with AHL Springfield in both the 1987-88 and 1988-89 seasons. King is more than eight months older than McLellan.
· Houston's Erik Reitz and Grand Rapids' Ryan Barnes were teammates in 1999-2000 with OHL Barrie.
· The University of Nebraska-Omaha should be proud as its top two scorers ever are in this game. Houston's Jeff Hoggan and the Griffins' David Brisson were Maverick teammates for three seasons from 1999-2000 to 2001-02. Hoggan left the school as its leading scorer, only to be passed by Brisson in 2002-03.
· The Aeros' Stephane Veilleux, currently in Minnesota, and Grand Rapids' Danny Groulx played together in 1999-2000 with Victoriaville of the QMJHL.
· Houston's Rickard Wallin, also in Minnesota, and the Griffins' Niklas Kronwall both hail from Stockholm, Sweden. Houston has two other Sweden natives on its team – Johan Holmqvist (Tolfta) and Mika Hannula (Huddinge).
· The Aeros' Johan Holmqvist and Grand Rapids' Anders Myrvold, were teammates with Hartford in 2001-02.
· Grand Rapids defenseman Ryan Bonni played with Houston's Jan Vodrazka in 2000-01 in Kansas City.
· The Aeros' Kevin Mitchell and Grand Rapids' Jeff Nelson were teammates in Cleveland in 2002-03.
· Houston defenseman Travis Roche played two seasons (1999-2000, 2000-01) at North Dakota with the Griffins' Aaron Schneekloth and Tim Skarperud. Schneekloth and Kyle Wanvig both hail from Calgary.
· Houston's Chris Bala posted 37 points (21+16=37) in 70 games in his rookie season of 2001-02 with Grand Rapids. Travis Richards, Tim Skarperud and Dave Van Drunen were all on that Griffins team.
Aeros streaking at the right time –
· Houston improved to 3-1-1-0 over the last five games with its 5-0 win over Utah on Saturday. That game rebounded the Aeros from a 3-1 defeat by Grand Rapids on Friday to snap a three-game unbeaten streak.
· Houston has eight wins in its last 34 games (8-16-9-1) and is at the .500 mark the last 44 games (17-17-9-1).
· The Aeros' 13-game winless streak (0-5-7-1) December 27-January 23 was five more than their previous franchise record eight-game streak (0-6-1-1), November 20-December 3 of this season.
· Houston ran off a season-high seven straight games without a loss (3-0-4-0) December 20-January 2, including four straight ties December 27-January 2.
· The Aeros won six straight December 5-17, outscoring their opponents 18-6 in the process.
· In the season's first 20 games, Houston allowed a league-worst 3.40 goals per game. In the last 46 games, the Aeros have yielded just 2.52 goals per game. The defensive streak has helped Houston move out of the basement to 2.77 goals against per game, up to 19th in the AHL.
Home cookin' – The Aeros, who play game four of a five-game homestand tonight, have won five of eight at home since falling 3-1 to Cincinnati January 27.
· The Aeros are averaging 3.40 goals per game over the last five home games.
· Houston started off its first season in Toyota Center just 2-6-1-1 but has improved to 14-11-5-2 at its new home. In the last 22 Toyota Center games, the Aeros have just five regulation losses and are 12-5-4-1.
· Houston's season-best, nine-game home unbeaten streak was snapped January 8 in a 1-0 overtime loss to Hartford.
· The Aeros haven't dropped back-to-back home games was November 22-December 1.
Aeros, Ducks, Rampage, Grizzlies in a playoff dog-fight – Houston has 58 points, three more than fifth-place Cincinnati and San Antonio and seven more than Utah in the West Division. Cincinnati, which has four games in hand on the Aeros, is in Utah Wednesday. San Antonio, which also has four games in hand on Houston, is off until it visits the Aeros this Friday to open up a critical home-and-home series. Utah, which has two games in hand on the Aeros, just wrapped up a grueling eight-game road trip and is hanging on for its playoff life. The Aeros have the most advantageous schedule left – they have six games left against teams with a better than .500 record. Cincinnati, meanwhile, still has 11 road games left and also 10 against teams at the .500 mark of above. The top five teams in the West make the playoffs, with the fourth- and fifth-place team playing a three-game qualifying series at the higher seed. Home ice will be important, since the four teams chasing the two playoff spots are a combined 38 games under .500. Houston's highest position this season was third on December 30.

"O" exploding –
· Houston is averaging 3.22 goals per game in the last nine games to improve to 2.39 goals per game, 19th in the AHL.
· Houston has been held to two goals or fewer in 23 of the last 37 games (62.2 percent), including a scoreless streak of 178 minutes, 52 seconds that included back-to-back shutouts January 8-9.
· Houston has scored one goal or fewer in 18 of its 66 games this season (27.2 percent) and two goals or less in 39 of 66 games (59.1 percent).
Wanvig reaches 20-goal mark – Aeros right wing Kyle Wanvig has gotten to the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his pro career. Wanvig, who scored his 20th February 28 against San Antonio, picked up No. 21 Saturday against Utah. Wanvig has 32 total points between Houston and Minnesota, and 31 alone with the Aeros (21+10=31). Wanvig's previous career-high for goals was 14 combined (13 with Houston) last season, when he had 30 points, 29 with the Aeros.
"Z" marks the spot – Aeros second-year blueliner Zbynek Michalek has blown by his rookie season totals.
· Michalek has 18 points (5+13=18) in 52 games – three more assists, one more goal and four more points than he had in 62 games last season.
· The Czech Republic native had points in three straight games (1+3=4) for the first time in his career February 28-March 5.
· The defenseman has a pair of multi-point games in the last seven contests, including two assists February 27 in San Antonio. He has three career multi-point games, two against Grand Rapids.
· The 21-year-old has played eight games with the Minnesota Wild this season, with no points.
"Boogeyman" brings crowd to feet – It's possible that the moment the crowd will remember most from Saturday's 5-0 thrashing of Utah was a goal that didn't happen. Aeros enforcer Derek Boogaard got a penalty shot midway through the third period and made a nice move but was robbed by Jason Bacashihua. Boogaard later completed his daily double with a fight against Utah's Jeff MacMillan. Boogaard's penalty shot was the Aeros' third of the season. They have gone 1-for-3, with Matt Foy getting the lone goal February 27 in San Antonio. Houston hasn't even yielded a penalty shot attempt this season. Boogaard's 200 penalty minutes tie him for second among AHL rookies, trailing only Syracuse's Brandon Sugden, who has 243.
Rookie Heid has points in three straight – Aeros rookie defenseman Chris Heid has points in three straight games for the first time this season. Heid has a goal and two helpers in that span, and he is a team-best plus-six in the last five games. Heid has three goals and nine assists this season.
Holmqvist looking for three in a row - A win tonight by Aeros netminder Johan Holmqvist would be his third in a row and fourth in six attempts. Holmqvist, who last won three in a row January 30-February 5, has three wins (3-6-1) in his last 10 games, but the Aeros have scored just 11 goals in those seven non-wins (1.57 gpg).
· Holmqvist, the 2003 Butterfield Trophy winner as Calder Cup Playoffs MVP, sports a 24-27-6 mark with Houston.
· Holmqvist's current 2.56 goals against average is a career best.
· Holmqvist went 6-0-0 with a 1.00 goals against average and a .963 save percentage during a six-game winning streak December 5-17. The six-game winning streak set a new career-high.
· The Aeros' netminder had a shutout streak of 189 minutes, seven seconds snapped December 17, just missing Frederic Chabot's 1996 team record mark of 193 minutes, 37 seconds.
· In his 19 wins this season, Holmqvist is allowing 1.00 goals per game and sports a .962 save percentage. In his 32 non-wins, Holmqvist sports a 3.51 goals against average and a .874 save percentage.
· Holmqvist leads the AHL in minutes played (3,002) and is fourth in saves (1,235). He's just 16 saves away from his career-high 1,251 in the 2001-02 season.
· Holmqvist has played in 51 games – three more than his previous career-high in 2001-02. Arguably the most durable AHL goalie in recent memory, Holmqvist is the only goalie to play 43 or more AHL games in each of the past four seasons.
Why not two – Johan Holmqvist picked up his third shutout of the season Saturday against Utah, and if his prior record is any indication, he'll be dynamite again tonight. Holmqvist's two other shutouts this season were back-to-back. He blanked San Antonio 4-0 December 13, then backed that up with a 1-0 victory over Norfolk three days later. Holmqvist has nine career AHL shutouts.
Mitchell a power-play specialist –
· Defenseman Kevin Mitchell has 16 points (2+14=16) with the Aeros, and 11 of those points have come on the power play. Last season with ECHL Louisiana, Mitchell had 23 of his 34 points with the man advantage.
· Mitchell's first two goals in an Aeros uniform have come on the power play. In his three-year pro career, including ECHL totals, Mitchell has 20 goals - and an eye-popping 16 have come on the power play. Each of Mitchell's five AHL goals has been on the power play.
· Mitchell had points in five straight games (1+5=6) for the first time in his AHL career January 23-31.
· Mitchell's five-game assist streak was an Aeros season-high by two games.
· The blueliner has 13 points (2+11=13) in the last 20 games, including three assists in the last four games.
Roche has 26 points in last 32 games - Defenseman Travis Roche has 26 points (4+22=26) in the last 32 games.
· Roche tied his career-high of three points in two out of three games on February 3 and 6, notching a goal and two assists February 3 in a 3-1 win over Utah, then posting three helpers in a 4-3 loss in Milwaukee three nights later. His three assists also tied a career high.
· Roche picked up his 100th pro and Aeros points January 24, and notched his 75th pro and Aeros assists February 6.
· Roche has 117 points (33g, 84a) in 187 pro games, while he has 116 points (33g, 83a) in 177 Aeros games.
· Roche, who leads all Aeros defensemen with 34 points (6+28=34), has the team lead with eight multiple point games. His 34 points also tie him for eighth in the AHL among defensemen.
Kettles wins a big one –
· Rookie goalie Kyle Kettles snapped an eight appearance winless streak (0-3-5) by making 26 saves in a 5-2 win in San Antonio February 27. Kettles made a season-best 34 saves last night but fell 3-1 to Grand Rapids.
· Kettles was 2-0-4 with a 0.95 goals against average and a .960 save percentage in six starts from December 23-January 17, dropping his goals against average from 3.65 to 2.19.
· The netminder picked up his first AHL shutout by making 20 saves in a January 9 game versus Worcester. Unfortunately for Kettles, his team didn't score either and he had to settle for a tie.
· The Aeros scored just 12 goals in his first 10 games this season, but they have 12 goals in his last four starts.
Holmqvist 4-5-0 against Grand Rapids – Aeros netminder Johan Holmqvist sports a 4-5-0 mark with a 2.65 goals against average and a .896 save percentage against the Griffins. This season, Holmqvist is 3-4-0 with a 2.69 goals against average versus Grand Rapids. Kyle Kettles is 0-1-0 with a good 1.23 goals against average in two career appearances against the Griffins.
MacDonald 5-4-0 versus Aeros – Grand Rapids netminder Joey MacDonald is 5-4-0 with a 2.25 goals against average in his career against the Aeros, including a 4-2-0 mark and a 1.84 goals against average this season. MacDonald is 5-2-0 in his last seven decisions after starting his career 0-2-0 against the Aeros. Veteran Marc Lamothe is 9-4-1 with a dynamite 2.05 goals against average versus Houston. His nine wins against the Aeros are the most of any active netminder. He is 1-1-0 with a 2.01 goals against average in two games against Houston this season after going 4-2-1 with a 1.49 goals against average and two shutouts versus the Aeros in 2002-03.
Penalty kill update –
· The Aeros' overall 86.2 percent penalty kill rate (260-301) is 12th in the AHL, after spending much of season in the upper half of the top 10.
· Houston killed off its first 31 shorthanded chances this season. Since then, opponents are 41-for-270 (15.2 percent) on the power play.
· Opponents are 6-for-35 (17.1 percent) on the power play over the last eight games and have scored 12 man-advantage goals in the last 15 games.
· The Aeros have yielded no power play goals in 35 of their 66 games, and have points in all but nine of those games (14-9-9-3).
· Houston has eight shorthanded goals, including a franchise record tying four by Stephane Veilleux.
· Grand Rapids is tied for second in the AHL on the power play at 17.6 percent.
· The Griffins are 6-for-27 (22.2 percent) on the power play over their last seven games.
· Grand Rapids is 7-for-39 (17.9 percent) with the man advantage versus the Aeros, and seven different Griffins have scored power play goals.
Power play update –
· Houston enters tonight's game 46 of 369 on the power play (12.5 percent), 22nd among 28 AHL teams.
· The Aeros have gone 34-for-226 (15.0 percent) since Matt Foy snapped a streak of 37 straight unsuccessful power plays December 5, raising their percentage from a season-low 8.3 to 12.4.
· In the last seven home games, the Aeros are an impressive 8-of-36 (22.2 percent) on the power play.
· Houston is 4-for-21 (19.1 percent) on the power play over its last four games since going 0-for-20 in the previous four.
· Houston's 369 power plays are the most in the AHL, 18 more than second-place Manitoba. The Aeros also led the league in 2002-03 with 514 chances.
· The Aeros have only five wins in 33 games (5-20-7-1) when not scoring a power-play goal.
· The Griffins are tied for sixth in the AHL on the penalty kill (87.5 percent).
· Grand Rapids has killed off eight straight power plays over the last three games since Philadelphia went 2-for-8 with the man advantage February 29 at Van Andel Arena.
· Houston is 5-for-39 (12.8 percent) on the power play versus Grand Rapids, with three goals coming during a team record span of 1:49 on a five-minute power play February 18. Five different Aeros have man-advantage goals against the Griffins.
The youth shall lead them – Houston's "kids" are leading the way in 2003-04. Through 66 games, nearly half of the Aeros' scoring has come from players in their first or second year in the North American pro game, or by players born in or after 1980. Of Houston's 429 scoring points, 213 (49.7 percent) have come from players in either their first or second season in North America, while 214 (49.9 percent) have come from players born in 1980 or after. Five of the team's six top scorers were born during the Reagan administration, with the lone exception being Travis Roche.
Career highs all around – You'd be hard pressed to find an Aero who hasn't set at least one AHL career-high in 2003-04. Among them: Johan Holmqvist (51 games played, 3042 minutes, 2.56 goals against average); Erik Reitz (17 assists, 21 points); Zbynek Michalek (5 goals, 13 assists, 18 points); Marc Cavosie (9 goals, 17 assists, 26 points); Dan Cavanaugh (18 assists, 28 points); Kevin Mitchell (14 assists, 16 points); Jeff Hoggan (13 goals, 12 assists, 25 points); Stephane Veilleux (13 goals tie career high, 25 assists, 38 points); Kyle Wanvig (21 goals, 31 points).
Aeros still winless in OT – The Aeros, winless at 0-3-11 in overtime, have played just two extra sessions since needing overtime in eight of 10 games from December 27-January 17. Houston is the lone AHL team without an overtime win after Utah won twice last week in the extra session. The last teams to go through a season without an overtime win were Hamilton and Hartford last season. The Aeros went 8-3-7 in overtime in 2002-03, second in the league in extra session wins (Chicago, 11). The Aeros' 11 ties are still seven short of the AHL/overtime era record, set in 1997-98 by St. John's. Grand Rapids (6-0-8) and San Antonio (6-0-7) are without a loss in overtime this season.
Houston has three wins when allowing more than one goal - The Aeros are an unbeaten in regulation 19-0-3-1 when allowing one or zero goals this season, and they have three wins (3-30-8-2) when yielding two or more.
Not comeback artists – Houston is one of four AHL teams without a win when trailing after two periods (0-24-6-1). The Aeros are also the only AHL team that is winless when trailing after one period (0-21-2-2). Since 1994-95, just one team – Manchester in 2001-02 – has gone through a season without a win when trailing after one period. The Monarchs did, however, get wins when trailing after two. Last season, the Aeros were second in the AHL with six wins when trailing after two periods. Grand Rapids led the circuit with seven.
Aeros have scored first in four straight – Houston has scored the game's first goal in four straight games for the first time since a six-game run from December 27-January 4. The Aeros had allowed the first goal in five straight games prior to February 27 against San Antonio. Houston is 17-7-5-1 overall when scoring first.
But when not scoring first... - The Aeros are 5-23-5-2 when allowing the game's first goal, including a winless 0-15-4-0 mark on the road. By rallying for a 3-3 tie February 26 in Milwaukee, Houston picked up its fourth road point when allowing the first goal.
