Admirals Take Down Grizzlies
November 8, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release
West Valley City, Utah - The Grizzlies came into game two seeking redemption against the Milwaukee Admirals following a tough loss on Wednesday. Friday's game would prove to be a closer one, going down to the last second of play but the Grizzlies still came up on the short end falling 2-1. For the Grizz, they would fall to 5-8 and drop their third consecutive home game, while Milwaukee would remain unbeaten in regulation at 6-0-4-1.
The Grizzlies had a golden opportunity in the first period when Jim Montgomery split the Admiral defense and drew a hooking penalty after six minutes of play. On the ensuing power play, hopes of going up a goal were dashed to pieces as David Gosselin got called for interference twenty seconds later. Period one ends up in a scoreless tie, Admirals almost doubling up on the Grizz with 11 shots on net - Utah had 6.
Early in the second period the Admirals make due on their offensive shot making, Konstatine Panov gets an easy rebound at the side of the net, giving Milwaukee the first goal of the game. Nearing the end of the period, feeling a sense of urgency, the Grizzlies pour it on. From the back of the net, Steve Gainey and Jeff MacMillan's two-man game found Mark Wotton setting up at the near circle who beat Lasak on the far side of the net to tie the game at one goal apiece.
Heading into the third, Steve Ott made a costly mistake getting called for high sticking. The Admirals with a man advantage spread the Grizzlies too thin and find an open Darren Haydar perched at the side of the net giving the Admirals the game winner. The Grizzlies had their chances in the last 1:30 of play. Assistant captain of the Admirals, Pascal Trepanier got called for delay of game and the Grizzlies pulled Corey Hirsch to make it 6 on 4. But Jan Lasak was up to the challenge and shut the door on two great scoring chances by Utah.
Grizzlies had 29 shots on net, Admirals had 36. Corey Hirsch would end up with 34 saves on the night.
Three Stars: 1. Darren Haydar (Admirals) 1 goal 2. Mark Wotton (Grizzlies) 1 goal 3. Jan Lasak (Admirals) 28 saves.
Next Game: The Grizzlies will play Saturday against the Grand Rapids Griffins at the E-Center. Face-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm mst.
