Grrrowl Outlast Sea Wolves, 4-3 in Shootout

BILOXI, Miss. – Greenville's Jonathan Roy had two goals waved off in the first period. But in the end it was Roy scoring the decisive goal in the seventh round of the shootout to defeat the Mississippi Sea Wolves, 4-3.

Greenville (6-3-2) scored first just 1:46 into the game on the power play. Mikko Sivonen deposited his fourth of the season, making it 1-0 for the Grrrowl.

Mississippi (8-3-1) responded 21 seconds later. Mike Scott converted off a Dave Paradise pass, beating Jayme Platt, tying the score 1-1.

The Sea Wolves grabbed the lead in the second, as Chris Cava let fly with a point shot deflecting off a Grrrowl stick infront. It was Cava's first of the year, giving Mississippi a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Greenville got its power play back in gear in the third. Grrrowl captain Tyler Deis found the back of the net. It was the fourth goal of the campaign for Deis, tying the score at two.

The Sea Wolves regained the lead at exactly 10:00. Blair Stayzer skated past Paul Flache then cut infront to stuff in his first of the year, giving Mississippi a 3-2 advantage.

But with under three minutes left, Greenville veteran Martin Masa lifted a shot over Greg Gardner's left shoulder, tying it 3-3.

The game went to the shootout. Masa scored for the Grrrowl. Rookie Jeff Hutchins tallied for the Sea Wolves. It came down to the seventh round and Roy finished it off going high with a shot over Gardner. Mississippi forward Dwayne Blais was denied by Platt, ending the game.

Gardner made 36 saves on 39 shots, dropping his record to 8-3-1. Platt turned away 32 of 35, improving his record to 2-2-2.

Mississippi went 0 for 9 on the power play. Greenville converted on 2 of 8 opportunities with the man advantage.

Notable: Prior to the game, there was a moment of silence for Sea Wolves season ticket holder Charles Jeffrey. He passed away on Monday. The Sea Wolves organization dedicated the game to him as well.

The Sea Wolves next two games are at the Wolves Den. Mississippi welcomes intrastate rival Jackson on Friday at 7:35 p.m. It's the second game in the battle for the Nextel Cup. The Sea Wolves lead the season series, two games to one. Friday also means military night, where all military personnel showing identification who buy one ticket, receive one free!

Next Saturday, November 16, the Sea Wolves host archrival Pensacola at 7:35 p.m. It's the second annual Nextel / Sea Wolves Howl Against Hunger. Fans are asked to bring a non-perishable food items and the first 3,000 fans will receive a ‘Howl Towel'. After the game, there will be a jersey auction with proceeds going towards the Gulf Coast Youth Hockey Association.
