San Diego Gulls News Release


SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Gulls started 3-0 then lost five straight. Now they've won two in a row and are looking to make it three straight Saturday night against the Idaho Steelheads at the Sports Arena.

The Blue and Orange broke its five game winless streak Friday, Nov. 1 against Idaho, thanks to a 2-1 victory. It may have been only a one-goal differential in the end, but the Gulls out-shot the Steelheads 42-22 and controlled the flow. They could've scored more if not for the spectacular goaltending of Jason Cugnet.

San Diego then traveled to Bakersfield the next night and avenged a 7-1 Condors win on Oct. 27 with a 4-1 triumph of its own. The Gulls jumped out to 4-0 lead before the Condors finally solved Trevor Koenig in the third period. R.J. Enga had his best game in a San Diego uniform, netting four points (2g, 2a). It was Enga's 15th career four-point game. Mark Pederson also had another strong game, scoring three points (1g, 2a).

The Gulls come into tonight's contest four points behind the Steelheads for first place in the West Coast Hockey League... Enga leads the team with 14 points... Pederson is second on the team with 11 points and first in the league with four game-winning goals... He's scored a point in six straight games... San Diego has won 40 straight games when leading after two periods... The power play continues to struggle however, going 4 for its last 56...

Idaho has dropped two in a row after winning five straight. It still leads the WCHL, however, with 15 points... Cory Morgan and Scott Swanson are tied for the team lead with 10 points apiece... Swanson is tied for the WCHL lead with 10 assists and leads all defensemen in points... Netminders Blair Allison (2.17) and Cugnet (2.21) rank 1 and 2 respectively in goals against average... The Steelheads are the No. 1 penalty-killing unit in the WCHL, clicking at 91.6 percent... Idaho only allows 2.27 goals and 23.09 shots per game, both best in the league...

The Gulls and Steelheads have met three times this season with Idaho holding a 2-1-0 series edge. The Blue and Orange are 25-16-3 all-time in the regular season.

San Diego finishes its brief two-game homestand Tuesday against the Fresno Falcons. Game time is set for 7 p.m. The Gulls then play four straight on the road: three in Anchorage next weekend and one in Fresno Nov. 19.
