Storm Wins Tenth Game
November 8, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Toledo Walleye News Release
(Toledo, Ohio) The Toledo Storm won the team's seventh game in seven tries at the Sports Arena this season, reached double-digits in wins in only the twelfth game of the season (10-1-1=21), and remained atop the Northwest Division (as well as the Northern Conference and the entire East Coast Hockey League) with a 5-2 win over their divisional rival, the Peoria Rivermen.
Peoria struck first with a short-handed goal at 4:04 of the first period when Mike Stuart broke down the left wing and ripped a low hard shot short-side on Toledo goaltender, Doug Teskey, who kicked out the right pad to make the stop. But Stuart corralled the rebound and found Darren Clark all alone in front of the net for the 1-0 lead. Toledo tied things with a power play goal at 8:17 of the first when Nathan Lutz stepped up to the top of the left circle and fired a bullet that made it through everything, including Peoria goaltender Duane Derksen. Toledo took the lead for good with 47 seconds left in the first period, when Matt Ellis walked out front from behind the net used his body as a shield and turned and wheeled one home. The teams played through a scoreless second period, despite a long 5-on-3 power play for the Rivermen, who created numerous scoring chances, all of which were repelled by Teskey. In the third, the Storm struck quickly when Teskey ripped a tape-to-tape pass to Alex Jacques in the neutral zone. Jacques then fired an equally accurate cross-ice pass to Nick Parillo, who was tearing down the left wing. Parillo got to the top of the left circle and unloaded a blast behind Derksen to give the Storm a two goal lead 1:20 into the period. Peoria answered 1:43 later with a high, hard snap shot by Greg Day that beat Teskey glove side. But the Storm capitalized on a couple of power plays down the stretch-the first by Tim Verbeek who buried a rebound at 11:20 and the second by Matt Ellis who somehow slipped one through 1:27 later-to pull away in a fight-filled third period.
