Bridgeport Islanders News Release

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (March 11, 2012) - Norfolk defenseman Mark Barberio scored the game-winning goal with 6:48 left in regulation as the Admirals netted four power play goals on eight chances to just one power play opportunity for the Sound Tigers, and Bridgeport fell 6-3 on Sunday afternoon. Norfolk has won 15 straight games and improves to 42-18-1-2. The Sound Tigers fall to 32-20-3-5.

For the second straight night, a turnover in the Sound Tigers zone led to a goal for the opposition in the first period. The Sound Tigers attempted to skate the puck out of the zone from behind their own net, but the puck came loose and straight to Norfolk's Trevor Smith. Smith deked in front of Poulin, then backhanded it home to give the Admirals a 1-0 lead with five minutes left in the opening period.

The Sound Tigers drew even early in the second period courtesy of their penalty kill. Trevor Frischmon blocked a shot from the point, then carried the puck out of the Sound Tigers zone on a breakaway. Frischmon skated in alone on Admirals goaltender Jaroslav Janus and fired over his blocker for his seventh goal of the season to tie the game at one 1:17 into the middle frame. However, the Admirals retook the lead with two quick goals on the power play late in the period. Mark Barberio put Norfolk in front at 17:16 when his point shot went cleanly through traffic past Poulin, and Richard Panik increased the Admirals lead to two when he beat Poulin from the slot with 32 seconds left in the middle frame.

Bridgeport responded with two goals midway through the third to even the score. Blair Riley started the play that brought the Sound Tigers within a goal, avoiding a hit along the left boards to start a 2-on-1 and finding Kael Mouillierat through the slot to beat Janus at 7:40. The Sound Tigers drew even at 11:14 when Tyler McNeely beat Janus from the right circle for his seventh goal of the season.

However, it was the Norfolk power play that doomed the Sound Tigers on Sunday. Barberio netted the eventual game-winner at 13:12, firing from the point off the far post and in for his second tally of the night. The Admirals increased their lead to two at 15:52 when Panik scored his second goal of the game on a perfect feed through the crease from Pierre-Cedric Labrie. The Admirals netted their fourth power play of the night with 2:28 left in regulation, as Tyler Johnson capped a four-point game with a goal to add to three assists.

Nine penalties were called on the Sound Tigers to just one against the Admirals. Janus made 27 saves to earn the win for Norfolk.

The Sound Tigers look to bounce back Friday night when they travel to Hartford to face the Whale at the XL Center at 7:00 p.m.
