Peoria Rivermen News Release
Jake Allen stopped all 32 shots on goal for his first shutout of the season in a 5-0 win over the Abbotsford Heat on Sunday afternoon. Phil McRae added three points, with a goal and two assists, at Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre in front of 2,379.
Allen made 71 saves on 72 shots over the two-game series in which the Rivermen outscored 9-1. They went 4-0-0 this season against the Heat. With the win, the Rivermen improved to 34-26-2-1 for 71 points and sit just one point behind the Charlotte Checkers for the Midwest Division lead.
Adam Cracknell gave Peoria an early 1-0 lead at 11:19 in the first period shortly after drawing a penalty. Cracknell went crashing into Danny Taylor as Evgeny Grachev sent a shot on goal that deflected off Cracknell and into the net. It was Cracknell's 19th of the year.
Brett Sonne improved the lead to 2-0 when he deflected a Shaun Heshka shot past Taylor at 16:04. Heshka's shot took off from the right wall before Sonne redirected the puck as he fell down in the slot.
Patrick O'Sullivan extended his point streak to four games since joining Peoria on a Stefan Della Rovere goal just 56 seconds into the second period. O'Sullivan fed McRae as he entered the zone before he dished a pass from the right circle to the far side of the goal as Della Rovere crashed the net and scored his fourth of the year.
Peoria capitalized on its first power play of the game at 5:46 in the third period. Taylor kicked McRae's initial shot aside before Heshka sent home the rebound from the left circle to improve the lead to 4-0.
McRae capped the scoring at 10:31 after a series of dekes and dangles through the Abbotsford zone and finished with a backhanded tally.
A total of 11 players tallied points for Peoria in the contest including two assists from Jonathan Cheechoo.
The Rivermen return to action on Wednesday to battle the Chicago Wolves at 7 p.m at Allstate Arena. Listen locally on CD Country 107.9 FM or worldwide online at www.rivermen.net.
