Admirals Power Past Sound Tigers 5-2

NORFOLK, Va. - Paul Szczechura netted two goals and an assist as the Norfolk Admirals (20-10-7-2) notched three power play goals to defeat the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (18-18-3-2), 5-2, on Friday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. The Admirals and Sound Tigers will square off again tomorrow night at Scope at 7:15 p.m. in the fourth annual Pink in the Rink to Benefit Susan G. Komen For the Cure.

Blair Jones also had a three-point performance for Norfolk with a goal and two assists. Mike Angelidis and Tim Marks also scored for the Admirals, who received a 26-save performance from Cedrick Desjardins for his fourteenth win of 2010-11.

The Admirals struck first just 3:03 into the contest on Jones' tenth goal of the season. On the rush, Szczechura threaded a pass from the top of the left circle to Jones at the right dot. Jones then sent a wrist shot over the glove of Bridgeport goaltender Mikko Koskinen for a 1-0 Norfolk lead.

The Sound Tigers tied the game at 1-1 late in the first period. As he slipped to the ice, Brett Motherwell sent a shot from the left circle through traffic that dented the opposite corner of the top of the net at 15:45.

Norfolk briefly reclaimed the lead with their first power play goal of the game at 6:41 of the second period. Szczechura sent a pass from the left point to Jones in the left corner, and Szczechura then skated into the slot. Jones returned the pass to Szczechura between the hashmarks, and Szczechura sent a shot over the glove of Koskinen for his tenth goal of the season.

However, Bridgeport leveled the score with a power play goal of their own less than three minutes later. Robin Figren sent a pass from the left half wall to Micheal Haley in the slot. Haley sent a wrist shot between the legs of Desjardins to tie the game at 2-2 at 9:14.

The Admirals used another power play goal to take a 3-2 lead just under eight minutes later. Marc-Antoine Pouliot sent a feed from the right point to Johan Harju on the bottom of the left circle. Harju threaded the puck through a sliding Sound Tigers defender onto the tape of Angelidis, who buried a shot through the legs of Koskinen at 17:07 for his thirteenth goal of the season.

Szczechura put the Admirals ahead 4-2 with his second power play goal of the contest. Troy Milam received a pass from Jones at the blue line and fired a shot on net through a screen. Szczechura deflected the shot past Koskinen at 14:05 of the final stanza.

Tim Marks capped off the scoring at the 17:41 mark of the third period by deflecting a Milam point shot past the glove of Koskinen to give the Admirals the 5-2 lead.

Cedrick Desjardins (28 shots, 26 saves) earned the win. Mikko Koskinen (35 shots, 30 saves) took the loss.

Norfolk was 3-4 on the power play. Bridgeport was 1-5.

The Admirals and Sound Tigers will square off again tomorrow night at Scope at 7:15 p.m. in the Fourth Annual Pink in the Rink to Benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Komen for the Cure.
