Chicago Wolves News Release
ROSEMONT, Ill.---The Chicago Wolves and Houston Aeros traded goals for three periods but the Aeros skated away with a 4-3 shootout victory at the Allstate Arena Friday night.
Forwards Nigel Dawes, Andre Deveaux and Jason Krog provided Chicago's offense, while goaltender Peter Mannino (12-10-2) kicked out 27 of Houston's 30 shots in regulation and overtime. Mannino thwarted four of Houston's five shootout attempts, but no Wolves were able to convert on their shootout tries.
"We look like a team that's played four games in five nights," said Wolves Head Coach Don Lever. "We were sloppy in the second period, but otherwise we fought back and kept ourselves in it."
Houston (23-18-1-2) took an early lead, 7:07 into the first period when Jon DiSalvatore angled a shot at Mannino from the right side of the net and the puck bounced off the netminder's leg and into the net.
Chicago (21-18-2-3) tied the score at one while on the power-play at 9:40 of the opening frame. Defenseman Paul Postma fired a blast from the blueline that Deveaux deflected over the shoulder off Houston goaltender Josh Tordjman.
The Aeros took a 2-1 lead at 7:07 of the second period when they intercepted a Wolves clearing attempt at the blueline and right wing Carson McMillan steered the puck past Mannino's glove.
The Wolves tied the game at 2-2 at 10:57 of the middle frame. Left wing Fredrik Petterson's shot from the slot was kicked out by Tordjman but the puck went right to Krog at the side of the crease and he tapped home the rebound.
Dawes put the Wolves ahead for the first time at 2:24 of the third period. The forward picked up the puck and raced down the right boards before colliding with an Aeros player in front of their bench. The play continued and Dawes moved into the slot where center Jared Ross found him and slid a pass across for Dawes to crank past Tordjman.
Tordjman (1-0-0) turned aside 21 shots for the Aeros in regulation and overtime and thwarted all five Chicago attempts in the shootout.
Chad Rau knotted the score at three when he ripped a shot down the slot and high into the right corner of the net at 11:15 of the third period.
The Wolves host the Rockford IceHogs at the Allstate Arena on Saturday at 7 p.m.
