Rochester Americans News Release

(Rochester, January 14)... Despite having a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the contest, the Rochester Americans surrendered three unanswered goals in an eventual 3-1 loss to the Lake Erie Monsters tonight at The Blue Cross Arena. With the loss, Rochester falls to a 17-19-2-2 overall record and has now dropped two straight and four of its last five as it officially reached the halfway point of the 2010-11 season this evening.

Bill Thomas (1+0) netted the lone Amerks goal tonight, while goaltender Jacob Markstrom posted 26 saves on 29 shots in the losing effort

The top performers for the Monsters this evening were Mark Olver (1+0), Luke Walker (1+0) and Mike Carman (1+0), who each scored one goal apiece. In the win, netminder John Grahame stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced.

The Amerks got on the scoreboard first in the opening period with Thomas' eighth goal of the season. After the puck was turned over by Monsters centerman Ben Walter, Thomas and Kenndal McArdle (0+1) gained advantage of the loose puck and entered Lake Erie's zone on a two-on-one odd-man rush. McArdle dished the puck straight to Thomas, who put it past Grahame at 6:34.

Lake Erie answered back and tied the game at one with just 41 seconds remaining in the first. After Patrick Rissmiller (0+1) carried the puck down the ice, he slid it to Olver, who then wristed it right behind Markstrom for his 12th of the year.

The Monsters gained momentum and took the lead nearly midway through the second stanza with a pair of goals within just under two minutes. First, Julian Talbot (0+1) picked up the puck in the neutral zone and sent it to Walker. Walker then powered up the right-wing side, and after successfully standing off an Amerk defender, stuffed it between Markstrom's legs for his sixth of the season at 8:35.

Lake Erie struck again at 10:22 with a shorthanded tally by Carman. After the Amerks turned over the puck at their own blueline, Carman and Justin Mercier (0+1) carried it up in a two-on-one opportunity of their own. After Markstrom denied Mercier's initial shot, Carman grabbed the rebound and tapped it in the Rochester net, earning him his eighth goal this year.

Despite outshooting the Monsters 17 to two in the final period, the Amerks were unable to net enough tallies to place them on top as Lake Erie held on for the win, snapping a two-game skid in the process.

After hosting the first four meetings between the two teams this season, Rochester makes its first visit to Central New York on Saturday, January 15 th where a 7:30 p.m. gathering with the Syracuse Crunch awaits at the War Memorial at Oncenter. Fans can tune into all the live action on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk.
