Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD - In a back-and-forth game, the Aberdeen IronBirds earned their first home win tonight, as they defeated the Staten Island Yankees, 5-4.
In his professional debut, RHP Pat Connaughton retired the only three batters he faced, while his fastball topped off at 96 miles per hour. His appearance was short-lived though, as he was replaced by RHP David Hess in the top of the second inning. Hess also pitched one inning, allowing just one hit and no runs.
Matt Grimes came into the game to replace Hess in the third, but allowed a homerun to Yankees' third-baseman Renzo Martini that gave Staten Island a 1-0 lead. Grimes was replaced by Janser Severino in the top of the fourth inning.
Yankees starter Matthew Borens was cruising through the first three innings, retiring the first eight batters he faced, but allowed a bunt single to IronBirds' centerfielder Jay Gonzalez. Gonzalez reached second on a wild-pitch with Jemile Weeks at the plate, but Weeks then popped out to third base to end the inning.
The Yankees struck again in the top of the fourth inning, as catcher Luis Torrens singled home right fielder Austin Aune to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.
The IronBirds answered back in a big way in the bottom of the fourth inning, plating three runs off reliever Sam Agnew-Wieland. Alex Murphy's RBI double scored Justin Viele for the first run and a 2-run double by Hector Veloz scored Murphy and Oswill Lartiguez to give the 'Birds a 3-2 lead.
Centerfielder Devyn Bolasky tied it up for the Yankees in the top of the fifth, hitting a sacrifice fly to left field to score Isaias Tejeda.
The IronBirds took the lead once again courtesy of Murphy's second RBI of the game, a groundout to first, which scored Jay Gonzalez, but the Yankees tied it up at 4 in the next half-inning, courtesy of an RBI single from Torrens.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, the IronBirds broke a tie once again when Justin Viele singled home Gonzalez to give the 'Birds a 5-4 lead.
Ivan Hernandez, who came into the game in the seventh inning, allowed only two base-runners to reach en route to closing out the game in the ninth inning and earning the win.
The IronBirds will face the Staten Island Yankees tomorrow and will search for their first series victory of the year. Kevin Gausman takes the mound for the 'Birds and Jordan Cote takes the mound for the Yankees. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
