Bravo Zulu! IronBirds Claim First Home Victory
The IronBirds earned their first victory at home last night, defeating the Staten Island Yankees, 5-4. Catcher Alex Murphy had two RBIs and scored once himself. Reliever Ivan Hernandez earned the victory, his first of the year, pitching three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, and striking out two.
Putting the 'Jay' in Juggernaut
Centerfielder Jay Gonzalez had a stellar offensive night. Gonzalez reached base in all three of his plate appearances, totaling two base hits and one walk. He also accounted for two of the IronBirds' five runs. Over his last two games, Gonzalez is four for six, with two doubles.
Getting Their Feet Wet
Three draft picks from the Baltimore Orioles' 2014 class made their professional debut last night as Pat Connaughton, David Hess, and Matt Grimes each pitched one inning. In their three innings combined, they allowed two hits, one run, and struck out one.
Ivan The Great
Relief pitcher Ivan Hernandez earned his first victory of the year last night after coming into the game in the 7th inning. Hernandez pitched three scoreless innings and allowed just two Yankees to reach base. He also struck out two batters and walked just one. The lone hit was a leadoff single allowed to shortstop Thairo Estrada in the 9th inning.
Welcome Back, Kevin Gausman...
The IronBirds will send RHP Kevin Gausman to the mound tonight. The former first-round draft pick made his professional debut with the IronBirds in 2012, before quickly climbing up the minor league ranks and debuting with the Orioles in May, 2013. Gausman has made 5 appearances with the Orioles this year, going 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA.
