Lowell Spinners News Release
Offensive Stars: The Spinners offense continued to fire on all cylinders, producing their fourth straight double-digit hit game, tying a season-high with 14 hits en route to an 11-5 win over the Connecticut Tigers Tuesday night...The first six batters in the Spinners line-up had multi-hit games with all nine batters scoring at least one run...Over the team ' s last five games the Spinners are hitting .298 (53-for-178) with five home runs an 27 RBI.
Betts Clears ' Em : 3B Jordan Betts continues to enjoy hitting at LeLacheur Park, going 2-for-4 with a bases clearing double Tuesday night...In seven games at home, Betts is batting .308 (8-for-26) with three doubles, three home runs and eight RBI ... With runners in scoring position, Betts is batting .286 (4-for-14) with five RBI, doubling twice...Betts now leads the Spinners with 10 RBI.
Travis Stays Hot: One of the hottest hitters in the NYPL is 1B Sam Travis, who continued his hot hitting with his fourth multi-hit game in his last five games...Over the last five, Travis is batting .455 (10-for-22) with two home runs and six RBI and is in the middle of a five-game hitting streak, raising his average from .154 to .292.
Romero Out: RHP Dioscar Romero started the season as the Spinners fifth starter and threw 3.2 scoreless innings June 17 in his season debut at Tri-City...Unfortunately for Romero, an injury in the days that followed has put him on the 7-Day Disabled List with his return uncertain.
Shepherd the Winner: RHP Chandler Shepherd, a 13th round pick out of Kentucky, earned his first professional win Tuesday night with two innings of relief...Shepherd recorded five of the six outs he got via the strikeout, allowing just an unearned run...In three appearances, Shepherd had yet to allow and earned run over five innings of work, striking out eight while walking just one.
Rotation Juggle : The starting rotation received a bit of juggling to account for the addition of RHP Simon Mercedes on rehab assignment and Monday ' s off-day...As a result, Mercedes will start Thursday ' s game and be followed by RHP Jason Garcia, pitching on normal rest...Friday ' s game at Tri-City will feature the pro debut of RHP Karsten Whitson, an 11th round draft pick, followed by RHP Willie Ethington in a piggy-back role.
Longhi Keeps Hitting : OF Nick Longhi went 2-for-4 with a walk Tuesday night, extending his hitting streak to five games...During his hitting-streak, Longhi is 9-for-19 with four multi-hit games in the five game stretch...For the season, Longhi is batting .358 (19-for-53), ranking third in the New York-Penn League at just 18-years old.
Garcia Gets Back At It : It has been a tough start to the season for RHP Edwar Garcia, who has struggled with the strike zone in the early going...Garcia made his first appearance in a week Tuesday night, pitching the ninth inning of the win...After walking the leadoff batter, Garcia limited the Tigers to one run on one hit...It was a marked improvement from his last appearance, during which he pitched just a third of an inning, allowing five runs on three hits and four walks June 24 against the Tigers.
Major League Accomplishment : RHP Anibal Sanchez, a 2004 Lowell Spinners alumnus, became the first alumnus to strike out 1,000 batters in the Major Leagues when he struck out Alberto Callaspo Monday night.
