Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - Following a 28 minute delay as the two teams waited for a storm front to pass by LeLacheur Park, the Connecticut Tigers jumped out to an early lead and held on as the two teams slogged through a three-hour game with the Spinners falling, 9-4, Wednesday night.
Connecticut (9-10) took advantage of a pair of miscues by Spinners starter Randy Perez (1-2, 3.06), scoring the game's first run on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers would extend their lead in the third inning, getting things started with a lead-off triple by Garrett Mattlage. After a groundout brought home Mattlage, Michael Gerber beat out an infield single, stole second and came around to score on a double by Joey Pankake to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
Connecticut continued to pour it on in the fourth inning, taking advantage of back-to-back one-out walks. After a strikeout, Gerber delivered and RBI single and Domingo Leyba followed with a two-run triple to extend the lead to 6-0.
Lowell (10-9) broke through in the fourth inning. After Sam Travis led off the inning being hit by a pitch, Franklin Guzman doubled to move Travis to third. A Cisco Tellez ground out plated the Spinners first run and a Mike Meyers RBI single cut the deficit to four, 6-2.
Brandon Show, making his professional debut, had a rough start to his career, giving up a lead-off triple to start the fifth inning. Following an RBI groundout, Show walked the next four batters before Rob Smorol came on in relief with the Tigers ahead, 8-2.
The Spinners would claw out single runs in the sixth and eighth innings, scoring on an error in the sixth and a Tellez sacrifice fly in the eighth, but the Tigers got a run back in the ninth for what would hold as a 9-4 final.
Offensively Bryan Hudson, Betts and Meyers each had multi-hit games, with Tellez picking up two RBI in his LeLacheur Park debut.
Perez started, lasting just 2.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks. Emfember Martinez followed with 1.1, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks. After Show's rough debut, Smorol threw 2.2 scoreless innings, striking out one while allowing just one hit. Ellis Jimenez closed out the game with 1.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits.
The two teams conclude the three-game series Thursday night at LeLacheur Park. Simon Mercedes gets the ball in a rehab appearance with Jason Garcia to follow. First pitch is 7:05 with post-game fireworks to follow.
