Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- Nick Tanielu was 4-for-5 with three runs, two doubles, a homer and four RBI, while Ariel Ovando added a two-run homer as the Tri-City ValleyCats scored a season-high 12 runs and handed the Vermont Lake Monsters their fourth straight loss with a 12-4 New York-Penn League victory Tuesday night at historic Centennial Field.

Tanielu had an RBI single in the first inning as the ValleyCats jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. Vermont's Jose Brizuela cut the deficit to one in the third inning with a leadoff home run, his first homer in his third game with the Lake Monsters. Ovando had an RBI single in the fourth and Vermont's Yairo Munoz an RBI triple in the fifth to again cut a Tri-City lead to one, but Ovando lined a two-run homer off Lake Monster starter in the sixth inning for a 5-2 ValleyCat lead.

Joe Bennie, who was 3-for-4 on the night to increase his average to .353 (24-for-68) for the season, smacked a one-out opposite-field home run to right field in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Tri-City lead to 5-3. But the ValleyCats would score three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to blow the game open. Terrell Joyce (2-for-4, two runs) had a two-run single in the seventh and Tanielu capped off his four-hit night with a three-run homer in the top of the eighth for a 11-3 ValleyCats lead.

Troy Schribner (2-1) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with five strikeouts over five innings to earn the win for Tri-City (12-7), while J.D. Davis was 2-for-4 with three runs and Bobby Boyd added two hits as four Vermont pitchers combined to allow a season-high 14 hits to the ValleyCats.

Vermont starter Jose Torres (0-3) allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits over five-plus innings of work to take the loss, while Munoz was 2-for-4 with a run scored and the RBI triple. With two more homers allowed on Tuesday, Lake Monster pitchers have given up seven home runs in the past three games and 12 in the last nine contest (Vermont 1-8 in those games).

The Lake Monsters will look to snap a four-game losing streak and pick up a win in the finale of their six-game homestand on Wednesday when they host Tri-City at 7:05 pm. The first 650 kids (15 years and under) to Centennial Field will receive a free BMX Youth Bike Helmet courtesy of The Automaster, Oil & Go and Free Press Media.
