Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - For the fourth straight game the Lowell Spinners offense produced a double digit hit performance and for the third straight, the Spinners emerged with a win, topping the Connecticut Tigers, 11-5, Tuesday night at LeLacheur Park.
The Spinners jumped out to a first inning lead, spraying the ball around the park from the very start. Danny Mars led off the inning with a double and Mauricio Dubon followed with one of his own, scoring Mars to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead.
Connecticut (8-10) evened the score in the top of the second inning, taking advantage of a leadoff single by Joey Pankake.
Lowell (10-8) re-took the lead in the bottom half of the inning with another extra-base hit to leadoff the inning. After Cole Sturgeon tripled to the left-centerfield gap, Nick Moore brought him home with an infield single. Moore promptly stole second and came around to score when Alixon Suarez grounded into a double play, pushing the lead to 3-1.
The lead was once again short-lived as the Tigers evened the score in the top half of the third inning, but the Spinners relentless offensive attack would produce a lead in the bottom half of the inning that would not be relinquished.
The Spinners promptly loaded the bases to lead off the third inning and Jordan Betts cleared them, delivering a bases clearing double. Betts would score on a run-scoring single by Sturgeon to advance the lead to 7-3.
Though the Tigers got a run back in the fifth inning, the Spinners broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning. Mars delivered a two-run single and a passed ball by Michael Thomas allowed him to score. A force out by Sturgeon brought in the final run to push the lead to seven.
The Tigers scored a meaningless ninth inning run against Edwar Garcia for the 11-5 final.
Each of the top six batters in the Spinners' line-up recorded a multi-hit game, with every batter scoring at least one run. Betts had three RBI while Mars and Sturgeon each added two RBI nights.
Chandler Shepherd (1-0, 0.00) picked up the first win of his professional career, allowing just one unearned run while striking out five of the six outs he recorded in relief of Jake Drehoff, who allowed three runs on six hits in four innings. Oscar Perez followed with two scoreless innings, striking out one, while Garcia closed out the win.
The two teams continue their three-game series Wednesday night for Kayem Franks $1 Weenie Wednesday. Randy Perez (1-1, 2.40) gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch.
