-SPIKES LOOK TO JUMP BACK INTO TIE WITH BATAVIA: The State College Spikes continue a three-game road series at Dwyer Stadium tonight against the Batavia Muckdogs in the middle game of the set. The Muckdogs now hold a one-game lead in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division, and the two teams meet in their third series against each other within the season's first three weeks. After the completion of this series, State College and Batavia are not scheduled to meet again until Augsut 29-30 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Spikes won a pair of games at Dwyer Stadium two weekends ago. Batavia holds the advantage in the all-time series, 44-42, and has won 23 of 42 meetings at Dwyer Stadium.
-LAST NIGHT: Andrew Sohn played a part in bringing home two runs, helping the State College Spikes to battle back from a four-run deficit before the Batavia Muckdogs held on to take a 6-4 decision on Tuesday night at Dwyer Stadium.
Sohn led off the scoring for State College in the second inning with a grounder that Batavia was ruled to have erred upon to allow Rowan Wick to cross the plate. In the sixth, Sohn's bases-loaded RBI single was the catalyst in starting the Spikes back from down 5-1. After another Muckdogs error allowed a pair of runs to score and cut the margin to 5-4, the Spikes put the tying run on base twice more, but could not push another runner home.
Darren Seferina and Brian O'Keefe each collected a pair of hits. Seferina reached base a total of four times by drawing two walks, while O'Keefe added a double.
Wick went 1-for-3 and was hit by a pitch. The North Vancouver, British Columbia native also scored a pair of runs on Canada Day.
-BAEZ GETS START FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Fernando Baez gets his second start of the season for the Spikes tonight. Baez began his season in the bullpen for State College, but the hard-throwing righty was recruited into the rotation after Daniel Poncedeleon was pushed back a day from his planned start on Thursday in Williamsport. The native Dominican threw four shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out a season-high four, and earned a permanent starting role. Tonight marks Baez's sixth outing of the year, and his .083 opponents batting average is one of the league's lowest marks.
-NEW MUCKDOG HOLMES GETS START: Left-hander Ben Holmes makes the start for Batavia tonight after being signed by the Marlins and assigned to the Muckdogs today. Holmes, also known as Ben Wetzler, was a fifth-round draft choice of the Phillies in 2013, but elected to return to pitch his final season at Oregon State. The Marlins then selected the southpaw in the ninth round of the 2014 MLB Draft after he led Oregon State into the NCAA Tournament with a 12-1 senior season. Holmes recorded a 0.78 ERA to lead the nation as well.
-WICK IT...WICK IT REAL GOOD : Rowan Wick grabbed more laurels to begin the 2014 season as he earned the St. Louis Cardinals Player of the Month award today. Wick has continued his torrid start the 2014 season, with his ten homers already tying him for the franchise single-season record with just 18 games gone on the year. The slugger also has at least one homer in every Spikes series. The North Vancouver, BC native is currently bidding for the NYPL's Triple Crown, as he is tied for the league lead with 21 RBI, and his .404 batting average is second only to Connecticut's Michael Gerber.
-SPIKE MARKS: Infielder Darren Seferina was added to the Spikes' roster on Sunday after initially being placed on the GCL Cardinals roster...Seferina is the Cardinals' fifth-round draft choice this year out of Miami-Dade College, and went 2-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases on Sunday...The Curacao native then reached base four times in last night's game...Will Anderson is ninth in the New York-Penn League with a 1.06 ERA...Wick is homering once every 5.7 at-bats, while teammate Alex De Leon has a long ball once every 13.25 at-bats...The Spikes lead the league with 95 runs scored as a team, and their 2.73 team ERA is second in the NYPL
