A tough nut to crack – Kernels fall to South Bend, 4-1

The Cedar Rapids Kernels have yet to solve the South Bend Silver Hawks in 2009, as they fell 4-1 in front of 5,141 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday night. South Bend scored three runs in the second inning off Kernels starter Ryan Chaffee (6-4) and then held the Kernels in check the rest of the game.

South Bend starter Ryan Cook (7-9) allowed a run on seven hits and struck out five over six innings for the win and Justin Mace worked around a walk in the ninth for his fifth save. Marc Krauss went 3-4 with three doubles and an RBI and Reynaldo Navarro was 1-3 with a double and 2 RBI.

Gabe Jacobo extended his hitting streak to 12 games, going 2-4 with an RBI. Matt Shoemaker and Andrew Taylor continue to deliver quality innings out of the Kernels bullpen, as Shoemaker scattered two hits and struck out four over five innings and Taylor struck out one over an inning.

Game two between the Kernels and Silver Hawks is Sunday afternoon at 2:05 pm. The first 1,000 children, 12-under, through the gates when they open at 1 pm, receive a free Mr. Shucks soap dispenser from McDonald's. It's also a 104.5 KDAT Sunday Family Day, where fans can get autographs from the Kernels, enjoy fun activities during the game, and run the bases and play catch in the outfield after the game.
