South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - With a 4-1 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Saturday night, the South Bend Silver Hawks have now taken eight straight series openers from their opponents. The last time the Hawks lost an opening game to a series was the first game of the second half against the Fort Wayne TinCaps.
South Bend jumped on Cedar Rapids starter Ryan Chaffee (LP, 6-4) for a run in the first, rallying with two outs. A.J. Pollock drew a two-out walk, and scored from first when Marc Krauss drilled a double to the right-center field gap, putting the Silver Hawks up 1-0. Krauss later added two more doubles in the game, as part of a 3-for-4 night at the plate.
Cedar Rapids answered immediately, tying the game before Ryan Cook (WP, 7-9) recorded an out. Tyson Auer singled, went to second on a single from Alexi Amarista, and scored by a single by Gabe Jacobo to tie the game 1-1. Cook settled down to strike out the side in order to get out of the inning.
South Bend gave Cook the lead back with a three run second, and again, the rally took place with two outs. Alberto Diaz and Jake Elmore walked, with Reynaldo Navarro driving them both home with a double to left. Elmore was safe at a close play at the plate, resulting in the ejection of Cedar Rapids manager Bill Mosiello. Alfredo Marte followed with a double to center, picking up his team-leading 50th RBI as Navarro scored from second for the 4-1 lead.
After a lot of scoring early, neither team would dent the dish again, as the Silver Hawks went on to the 4-1 victory.
Chaffee lasted just three innings for Cedar Rapids, allowing four earned runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Cook turned in six solid innings for the Hawks, allowing just the one run in the first, while striking out five.
Bryan Woodall (ND) pitched two perfect innings of relief, continuing to dominate since leaving the disabled list in early June. Woodall hasn't allowed an earned run over 25.0 innings since June 5th and has pitched 17.1 consecutive scoreless innings, a team high for the Silver Hawks in 2009. Woodall has lowered his ERA from 7.08 on June 5th to 3.18 after tonight's game.
Justin Mace (SV, 5) struck out two in the ninth to earn the save.
The Silver Hawks and Kernels continue the series with game two Sunday afternoon, scheduled for a 3:05 PM Eastern Time first pitch. LHP Taylor Sinclair (3-3, 3.26 ERA) toes the rubber for the Silver Hawks, with Cedar Rapids starting LHP Manuel Flores (6-4, 3.77 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 2:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
