West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

CLINTON, IA - Tremendous all-around play by the Clinton LumberKings overwhelmed the West Michigan Whitecaps, 8-2, in the series opener at Alliant Energy Field. The Whitecaps, the Midwest League's top defensive team, uncharacteristically committed four errors to assist Clinton. The loss evens the Whitecaps' road trip at two wins and two losses.

Heading into game one the Whitecaps had one of their best on the mound. Right hander Brayan Villarreal (3-1) started the game and was roughed up by the L-Kings. Though he lasted 5.1 innings, Villarreal gave up 3 earned runs on 8 hits with 4 strikeouts. The loss was his first of the season.

Clinton turned to Alfredo Venegas as their man. He grabbed the win to even his record going 7 innings, scattering 8 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, and 2 strikeouts.

West Michigan opened the scoring in the top of the second with a two-out, RBI single by Avisail Garcia. He brought in Jordan Lennerton for a 1-0 Whitecaps' lead.

The lead was short lived. Clinton tied the game in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly from Blake Ochoa. Nate Tenbrink had led off with a single and moved to third on two Whitecaps' errors.

Clinton would rattle off 5 unanswered runs from the second inning through the sixth to build a 5-1 lead.

‘Caps' right fielder Garcia singled to begin the seventh, and he eventually scored on Brandon Douglas' two-out hit.

The LumberKings would put the game away in the bottom of the seventh with three runs. Clinton totaled 5 hits, including the lone extra-base hit, to push the lead to 8-2.

Clinton amassed 13 hits in the game; Nate Tenbrink led the attack going 3-4 with 2 RBI.

The Whitecaps offense was led by Bryan Pounds and Avisail Garcia who each had 2 hits.

Game two of the series is set for 3:00 EST on Sunday afternoon at Alliant Energy Field.
