West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
DAVENPORT, IA - The Quad Cities River Bandits roared through the first inning Friday night, scoring 4 runs, as nine men came to the plate in an 8-4 rain-shortened victory against the West Michigan Whitecaps at Modern Woodmen Park. The win helps the 'Bandits avoid the sweep and gives Quad Cities its first win against the Whitecaps in 2009.
Rain was expected Friday night, but it held off long enough for seven innings to be played.
The first inning belonged to the 'Bandits. After starter Kevin Thomas set the Whitecaps down in order, Quad Cities immediately went to work on West Michigan starter Luke Putkonen. The River Bandits put together 2 hits, 3 walks, and two key 'Caps' errors for a 4-0 lead. Both hits were singles, and Quad Cities utilized 2 sacrifice flies as well.
Putkonen lasted only a third of an inning in the loss. He did not strike out a batter.
The Whitecaps tried to answer in the second. A one-out single by Bryan Pounds set the stage for Avisail Garcia's sacrifice fly to plate Pounds for the 'Caps' first run.
An RBI-ground out by Pounds brought in Brandon Douglas in the fourth to cut Quad Cities' lead to 5-2.
Garcia would lead off the fifth getting aboard on an error. Ben Guez drove him home with a ground out to bring the Whitecaps as close as they would come all night, 5-3.
But in the bottom of the fifth, the 'Bandits struck for 3 runs. Three consecutive hits loaded the bases, and a walk to Jason Stidham forced in a run. Both Jon Edwards and Roberto Espinoza followed with RBI ground outs to second for an 8-3 Quad Cities advantage.
West Michigan managed to squeak in one final run before the rain came. In the sixth inning, Billy Nowlin cracked one-out double, and Alden Carrithers drove him in with a two-out, RBI hit.
The rain poured down at the end of the seventh inning, and the game was eventually called with Quad Cities prevailing, 8-4.
Alden Carrithers was the only 'Cap with more than one hit.
West Michigan travels to Clinton, IA for a three-game series with the Lumber Kings starting on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. at Alliant Energy Field.
