PRINCE GEORGE, BC - Today, the Western Hockey League released the 2018-19 regular season schedule, and the Prince George Cougars open their 25th WHL season on Friday, September 21st, when they kick-off a weekend double-header against the Victoria Royals on Vancouver Island.
The Cougars Home Opener is Friday, September 28th against the Kelowna Rockets, as the Cougars face their BC Division rivals in a weekend double-header. The Home Opener is one of 10 feature games scheduled for the upcoming season.
"It's a special season, as we celebrate our 25th anniversary in Prince George, and we have a lot of exciting plans in place to celebrate our history," stated Andy Beesley Vice President, Business. "We continue to strive to deliver the very best sports entertainment in Northern British Columbia."
Some of the highlights of the Cougars 10 feature games is the Home Opener, the annual "Pink in the Rink" and "Teddy Bear Toss" games, along with a few new wrinkles the team will reveal closer to the regular season. One staple that will return once again, is "Fan Appreciation Night," which is March 16th, against the Kamloops Blazers.
22 of the Cougars 34 home games fall on the weekend, as they play seven Friday night games, 11 on Saturdays and four Sunday matinee games. They also have a matinee home game on Family Day in February against Everett. All home games are 7 pm starts, except for Sundays and Family Day, which are scheduled for 2 pm.
The WHL has adopted a 68-game regular season schedule for the upcoming season, as the Cougars will play 34 games at home and on the road. Up until this season, the WHL played a 72-game regular season schedule since 1975-76 season.
