Nieuwenhuis Not Nice To Baysox

Bowie Baysox News Release

BOWIE, Md. - Binghamton left-hander Eric Niesen held the Bowie offense in check for 7.1 innings, as the B-Mets cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Baysox. Right-hander Ryohei Tanaka suffered his second loss of the season, tying a career-high with eight hits and five earned runs allowed in 5.1 innings of work.

"They trust and depend on me as we try to make the playoffs," Tanaka said through an interpreter after the game. "I just wasn't able to stop them tonight and it is very disappointing."

Binghamton got on the board in the first inning as Kirk Nieuwenhuis led off the game with a single to right. After moving into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, D.J. Wabick laced an RBI single to center field to put the B-Mets on the board.

Nieuwenhuis and Wabick would strike again in the third inning, getting to Tanaka for a pair of solo home runs to extend the lead to three. The right-hander said he was frustrated with his inability to prevent the top of the order from consistently beating him.

"(To become better) I have to work on keeping the leadoff hitter off base," Tanaka said. "I need to do a better job with control to prevent that from happening."

Nieuwenhuis doubled to start the fifth inning, and Wabick drew a one out walk to give Binghamton another scoring chance. Tanaka got Salvador Paniagua swinging for the second out of the inning, but Carlos Guzman and Zach Lutz followed with RBI singles to make the score 5-0 in favor of the B-Mets.

Right-hander Jim Hoey came on to replace Tanaka with one out and a runner on first in the top of the sixth inning. Hoey struggled with his control, but kept Binghamton off the board in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Right-hander Ryan Ouellette replaced Hoey to start the eighth inning, allowing a leadoff single to Emmanuel Garcia. After moving to second on a groundout, Garcia came around to score when Nieuwenhuis laced his fourth hit of the game into the gap in left-center for an RBI double. The Binghamton center fielder finished the night 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, two RBI and three runs scored.

The Baysox offense finally got to Niesen in the bottom of the eighth, as catcher Adam Donachie started the inning with a single. Designated hitter Steve Torrealba singled and shortstop Pedro Florimon grounded into a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners with one out. Center fielder Matt Angle came through with an RBI single, chasing Niesen from the game after allowing a run on five hits over 7.1 innings of work. Jose De La Torre came on to get the B-Mets out of a jam, retiring five of the six batters he faced to end the game.

"(Niesen) was keeping it down in the zone and mixing his pitches well and was very effective," said first baseman Brandon Waring, who went 1-for-4 with three strikeouts on the night. "He definitely had a good breaking ball and he used that on me a couple times."

It was not all bad news for Waring, the slugger found out after the game he was named the 2009 Carolina League Most Valuable Player. Waring took home the honors after mashing 26 home runs and 90 RBI in 128 games with Class A+ Frederick on the season before being promoted to Bowie on Tuesday.

"It's a huge honor," Waring said. "I was fortunate to have a good season and put up some good numbers and it lead to the MVP."

The Baysox close out their three-game set with Binghamton tomorrow night as RHP Fredy Deza (5-7, 3.56) takes the mound. No starter has been announced for the B-Mets. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. at Prince George's Stadium.
