Special Teams Help Reign Past Eagles

Colorado Eagles News Release

LOVELAND, Colo. - The Ontario Reign topped the Colorado Eagles, 3-1, in the first of back-to-back meetings between the teams. The game was essentially decided during a short stretch of the third period in which the Pacific Division leading Reign capitalized on a two-man advantage, followed shortly after by an unproductive 5-on-3 opportunity for the Eagles. Otherwise, the contest was essentially a draw, with Colorado out-shooting Ontario, 26-25, in a closely contested affair.

Colorado had two chances to convert with its league-leading power play in the first half of the first frame, but were unable to get a puck past Jean-Francois Berube. Ontario, however, took advantage of its one and only power play in the opening period at 13:41. On the play, Cameron Burt's shot from the point hit an Eagles defender in the slot and C.J. Stretch was able to pick up the puck and toss it past Adam Brown.

The second session was a reverse image of the first with Ontario going 0-for-2 on the power play and the Eagles making good on their only opportunity. In fact, it took Colorado just three seconds to convert on their chance 15 minutes in when Michael Forney won a faceoff in the right circle cleanly back to Trent Daavettila, who sent the pass across the zone to a wide open Collin Bowman for a shot that snuck past Berube's glove.

Special teams continued to play a large part in the game in the third period. Early in the final frame, the Reign were awarded 1:41 of 5-on-3 play, and with just four seconds left on the two man advantage, Derek Couture struck from the slot to put Ontario up 2-1.

The Eagles had a chance to counter five minutes later with 1:11 worth of their own 5-on-3, but after a timeout to rest and plan their attach, they failed to register more than a single shot on the entire advantage.

Couture -- playing in his first game back after a call-up to the AHL -- converted a Reign rush to make it 3-1 when he whacked home his own rebound from the crease at 16:25. With Berube, one of the league's top netminders, stopping 25 of 26 shots on the night, that two goal cushion was too much for the Eagles to overcome.
