Titans Week In Review

January 25, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Titans News Release

The Titans had an interesting schedule over the last two weeks. After playing just two games the week of January 13 - both against South Carolina - they had a 4-game slate (3 home) this past week. Even though they could have used 8 points to jump back into the playoff mix 40 games into this year's schedule, grabbing 5 points - including 3 against two division leaders - is a good start towards a playoff run.

Wednesday January 16: Reading - 3, TRENTON - 4 (OT)

For the second straight time, the Titans took a home, OT decision from their arch rivals and Eastern Conference leading Royals.

After a late first period goal gave Reading a 1-0 lead, the game became a punch-counterpunch contest. Jacob Cepis (11) scored on the PP and J. S. Berube (1) added another for a 2-1 lead after the second.

Reading scored quickly in the third to tie things at 2-2, but captain Andy Bohmbach (17) responded on the PP five minutes in to retake the lead, 3-2.

Reading's Ian O'Connor grabbed his second of the night to tie the game back up, then saw his mates fail to capitalize on a PP that carried into OT. Trenton managed to get two man-advantages of its own, the last one in the final two minutes, where Bohmbach bagged his second PPG of the night with just 27 seconds to play.

Scott Wedgewood (26 saves) netted his 11th win of the season, as the Titans went 3-for-6 on the PP, while holding Reading to 0-for-4. The Titans have now stopped 39 straight Royals' PP chances (45-for-47 on the season).

Friday January 18: TRENTON - 8, Elmira - 5

Trenton kept the good times rolling with an important win over their Atlantic Division foe. But it wasn't without some anxious moments.

Despite allowing a goal late in the first, Trenton took a 4-2 lead into the break with goals by Connor Goggin (3), Bohmbach (PP, 19), Kory Nagy (3) and former Phantom/Flyer David Laliberte (1). For Bohmbach, it was his 3rd consecutive goal that came on the PP. He leads the team with 10 on the season.

Elmira made it 4-3 early in the second. Late in the frame Derrick Pallis scored his first goal (PPG) in the ECHL and Jacob Drewiske added his seventh to bump the lead back to three, 6-3.

Still, the Jackals roared back like they have all season, cutting the deficit back to one (6-5) with 3:11 left to play. Justin Taylor picked up his fourth 19 seconds later while Cepis (12) found an empty net to end the scoring. Despite the five goals, Wedgewood was brilliant in his 12th win, stopping 33 - some in spectacular fashion.

Saturday January 19: CINCINNATI - 4, Trenton - 0

For the second time in two seasons, the Cyclones left the Sun National Bank Center with a shutout win over the Titans.

A pair of power play goals gave the Cyclones a 2-0 lead through two, then a fluke bounce found the back of the Trenton net for a 3-0 Cincinnati advantage. Trenton pulled Wedgewood - who once again was outstanding in stopping 38 - for the extra attacker, but Cinncy was able to hold off the charge and deposit an empty-netter to end the scoring.

Michael Houser stopped 33, picking up his first career shutout in just his eighth professional game.

Sunday January 20: CINCINNATI - 4, Trenton - 3 (SO)

Houser got his sixth win of the year, but the Titans made him earn this one down to the bitter end.

Down 1-0 to start the second, Drewiske got his eighth of the year at the 5:00 mark. Then Stephen Schultz (13) ripped one past Houser on the power play for a 2-1 lead at 16:15.

The lead held until 3:16 of the third when Mike Embach tied the score. Garrett Wilson got his third of the series (all PPG) and 18th of the year three minutes later to regain the lead, when his pass ricocheted off a Titans' skate and past Wedegewood for a 3-2 lead.

But with 50 seconds left in regulation, on a PP and with the goalie pulled, Pallis (2) blasted one through heavy traffic and past Houser to force OT.

Taylor Ellington scored for CIN to give them a 1-0 first round lead. No one could beat Houser over the next three rounds, so when Wilson hit the ice in Round 4, his score ended the shootout and the game.

The (Re)View From Atop Mount Olympus

Relief Effort In The Wake Of Hurricane Sandy: As time passes and the holidays came upon us, it is easy to forget the people who were - and continue to be - effected in the aftermath of Sandy. The Titans are grateful to the members of Titans Nation who provided - and continue to offer - relief supplies for those in need.

The Titans will continue the help their neighbors and will keep delivering donations as they come in. Trenton would like to thank its friends at Justin's Rentals in Trenton, for supplying the transportation needed to deliver those donations. For information on how you can help, please call the Titans' Offices at 609-341-1100.

We Will Protect This House...And Yours: Trenton's Penalty Killing unit is the best in the ECHL. They are currently tied with Las Vegas overall at 85.4% (146-171). The Titans are 5th at home (86.7) and on the road (84%).

But...We Will Attack Your House Too: The Titans have a knack for scoring on the man-advantage when on the road. Currently they are ranked 3rd in the league at 22% (20 goals-91 PP Opps). They are also T-5th overall at 20.7% (40-193).

Uneven-Strength Rivalry: The Titans have had an amazing run killing off the power plays of the Eastern Conference's best team, Atlantic Division rival Reading. They have held the Royals' PP scoreless in 39-straight chances (over nine games). The last PPG for Reading against Trenton was its first chance on October 17, 2012, scoring at 15:03 of the opening period. In 10 meetings this season, Reading has just 2 PPG in 43 chances (scoring once in each of the first two meetings this year).

Oh, Captain, My Captain: Captain Andy Bohmbach currently leads the team in Points (38), Goals (19), PPG (10), SHG (3) and GWG (5).

Shorties In Your House: Trenton still leads the ECHL in Road SHG (7). The Titans had 7 SHG (3 road) all of last season.

Upcoming Slate

Friday January 25 vs. LAS VEGAS WRANGLERS (7:05 pm): Trenton is 1-0-1 (1-0 Home) all-time vs. LV, but both games were in the Wranglers' inaugural season (2003-04).

Sunday January 27 at ELMIRA JACKALS (4:05 pm): Trenton is 4-3-1 against the Jackals this year.
