March 29, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Stockton Thunder News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, proud ECHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League, and head coach Matt Thomas announced today that the team has signed rookie right wing Greg Squires. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Squires, 23, will be available to make his pro debut with the Thunder tomorrow at 6:10 p.m. (1280 KWSX/StocktonThunder.com) against the Idaho Steelheads at Century Link Arena.
"In talks with the coaching staff at Western Michigan, the one thing that stood out about Greg is that he plays with pace," said Thomas. "He fits in well with our high tempo style and we add a threat with his speed and ability to make plays. He's a player with great potential to play at the higher levels and will be a great fit for us in the postseason."
Squires competed for four years in college at Western Michigan University (NCAA), a program under the current guidance of head coach Andy Murray, who has served as head coach for the Los Angeles Kings and St. Louis Blues. Squires skated in 160 career games for the Broncos, scoring 100 points while collecting 74 assists and 109 penalty minutes.
The 5-foot-8 and 180 pound forward wrapped up his college career this season with 19 points (8g-11a) and 24 penalty minutes in 41 games.
As a teammate of Thunder forward Max Campbell, Squires never missed a game through his first three seasons and notched career highs as a 2009-10 junior when he ranked fourth in the program with 28 points (7g-21a) in 42 games, helping guide Western Michigan to its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1996.
Squires will wear #26 on the Thunder roster, retaining his same jersey number from college.
The schedule for the opening round of the 2012 Kelly Cup Playoffs will be announced soon.
Season Tickets are on sale now and fans can claim priority seating for the 2012 Kelly Cup Playoffs by purchasing Thunder Season Tickets for 2012-13.
