
Fisher Cats Pound Sea Dogs 13-7

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs committed five errors as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats cruised to a 13-7 win Thursday night at Hadlock Field. The Fisher Cats improved to an Eastern League best 30-16 while taking three of four games from the Sea Dogs.
The Fisher Cats offense tied season highs with 13 runs scored and 16 hits, while the New Hampshire pitching staff recorded a season high 13 strikeouts. Seven of the nine Fisher Cats' starters collected multi-hit games led by Yan Gomes who was credited with three hits. Adeiny Hechavarria and Mike McDade homered for the visitors, while Hechavarria and Darin Mastroianni both drove-in three runs to lead the offensive outbreak.
For the second night in a row, the Sea Dogs used the speed of Jeremy Hazelbaker to jump out to a 1-0 in the first. Hazelbaker walked, stole second, advance to third on a throwing error by the catcher, and scored on a wild pitch by New Hampshire starter B.J. LaMura.
The Sea Dogs lead would be short lived; in the second inning Gomes singled with the bases loaded scoring McDade and Moises Sierra giving New Hampshire a 2-1 lead.
Three Portland errors and pair of New Hampshire hits in the fourth inning plated three runs for the Fisher Cats and chased Portland starter Miguel Gonzalez from the game. With two runners on Callix Crabbe reached on a fielding error by first baseman Jorge Padron, scoring two runs. On the same play, a throwing error by right-fielder Chih Hsien Chiang allowed Crabbe to advance to third where he would score on a sacrifice fly by Mastroianni and a fielding error by Chiang as New Hampshire took a 5-1 lead.
Gonzalez (0-1), who was assigned from Triple-A Pawtucket earlier today, suffered the loss tossing 3.1 innings allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits. He walked four and recorded three strikeouts.
LaMura held the Sea Dogs to three runs (two earned) on three hits to even his record at 3-3. He struck out seven in five innings of work and walked three.
The Fisher Cats exploded for four more runs in fifth inning off reliever Kyle Fernandes highlighted by a two run homer by Hechavarria, his third of the season extending the lead to 9-3.
Portland fought back with two runs in the eighth highlighted by Ryan Lavarnway's team leading eighth home run to make it 9-5.
New Hampshire continued the offensive assault scoring four more times in the ninth off reliever Santo Luis with McDade providing the fireworks with a two blast.
Portland chipped away at the lead scoring twice in the ninth with RBI singles from Alex Hassan and Tim Federowicz.
The Sea Dogs will begin a five game/ four day Memorial Day weekend homestand with the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees; the Trenton Thunder with a 7:00 PM start at Hadlock Field on Friday.
