Early Runs Doom Drive, 9-5, Versus Tourists

May 10, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release

Asheville, NC - While the Drive (16-16) scored at least five runs for the 17th time this season, it came eight innings too late as they had dug themselves a deep hole they weren't able to get out of. The Asheville Tourists (16-16) scored eight runs in the first five innings at McCormick Field, and went onto capture a 9-5 victory in the second game of the series.

Following five scoreless innings in his last outing, Kyle Stroup's (1-3) roller coaster season continued as he was knocked from the game after just two innings this go-around. The right-hander surrendered four runs on five hits and four walks, while failing to strikeout a batter for the first time this season.

The Tourists' Rafael Ortega, who finished 4-for-5 with 5 RBI, began his hot night at the plate with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first. Asheville added three more runs in the second, and a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to mount their lead.

After Joshua Mueller and Brad McAtee combined to limit the Drive to just three hits through the first seven innings, Greenville's offense exploded in the top of the eighth. 11 batters stepped up to the plate, with Drew Dominguez tallying his first of two hits in the frame with a leadoff homer. For the Braintree, MA native, it was the first professional round tripper of his three year career.

The Drive added four more runs, all with two outs, on RBI-doubles off the bats of Bryce Brentz, Miles Head, and Lucas LeBlanc. Brandon Jacobs added an RBI-single.

But the Drive would do no further damage, dropping them into a three-way tie atop the Southern Division with the Tourists and Lexington Legends.

In tallying his second straight three-hit performance, Brentz extended his on-base and hit streaks to 31 and 22 games, respectively â€" both tops across all of Minor League Baseball.

The Drive and Tourists continue their four-game series on Wednesday, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM from McCormick Field. Greenville will look to rebound with right-hander Anthony Ranaudo (2-1, 2.30 ERA) heading to the mound, as Asheville counters with left-hander Edwar Cabrera (2-1, 4.03 ERA).

The Drive return home to Fluor Field on May 13th, but before that their home-field will feature some exciting collegiate baseball action. The College Baseball Series at Fluor Field, presented by BB&T, concludes on Wednesday with the USC-Upstate Spartans matching up against The Citadel Bulldogs. First pitch is set for 7 PM.
