Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - In what was a one-sided contest, both offensively and on the mound, the Drive (9-10) suffered a debilitating 11-0 loss to the Greensboro Grasshoppers (12-7) on Tuesday at Fluor Field. Enduring their first shutout loss of the season, Greenville mustered only five hits, while the âHoppers scattered 12 hits to run their winning streak to 9 games.
The Grasshoppers jumped on Brandon Workman (0-3) in the top of the first, as Marcell Ozuna crushed a two-run homer to deep left-centerfield, his seventh of the season. The game became out of reach with Greensboro recording runs in six of the games first seven innings.
Making his fourth start of the season, Workman lasted 3.1 innings in which he tossed 68 pitches, allowing four runs on five hits, watching his ERA raise 5.65 on the season.
The bullpen didn't fare much better against the Grasshoppers' explosive offense, giving up seven runs over the final 5.2 innings. Dennis Neuman relieved Workman, allowing a run in 1.2 innings, before Hunter Cervenka was knocked around for five runs over the same span on four hits and four walks.
After scoring single runs in the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, Grasshoppers' third baseman Ryan Fisher delivered the crushing blow with a grand slam off Cervenka in the top of the seventh.
Even right-hander Jordan Flasher was not safe from the onslaught, who gave up the final run of the ballgame in the top of the ninth, ending his scoreless inning streak at 9.0 innings - a span of five relief appearances.
Eight of Greensboro's nine batters recorded a hit, with Mark Canha and Jacob Realmuto leading the way with three hits apiece. Although he didn't knock in a run, Canha scored four times.
The Drive and Grasshoppers continue their five-game series tomorrow evening at Fluor Field, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. A pair of right-handers will head to the mound for their respective teams, as Miguel Celestino (0-1, 5.40 ERA) is in search of his first win with Greenville, while Greensboro counters with Jheyson Manzueta (0-1, 9.90 ERA).
In addition, tomorrow night's game features the Drive's first "Playcation" of the year. For just $25, fans will receive two tickets to Wednesday's game, as well as two passes to The Children's Museum of the Upstate and Camelot Cinemas.
