Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine-The Portland Sea Dogs scored three times in the first and four times in the second to jump out to an early lead before holding on to beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 9-6 on Friday night before 7,160 at Hadlock Field.
With one out and Portland leading 4-2 in the second inning, Luis Exposito came to the plate with the bases loaded and promptly laced a bases clearing double. The double gave Portland what would be some much-needed breathing room, and brought Exposito's team leading RBI total to 78.
Blake Maxwell took the ball for Portland, making his second spot start since joining the Sea Dogs on July 15th. Richmond was able to scratch a run across in the first inning off Maxwell on a two out single by Brandon Belt.
Portland responded with four straight hits to begin the bottom of the first off Richmond starter Clayton Tanner, starting with Che-Hsuan Lin's double to right. Nate Spears then singled up the middle to score Lin with the tying run. Ray Chang's eighth home run of the season would drive in two to make it a 3-1 Portland advantage.
Unable to figure out a way to stifle the Portland offense, Clayton's night would come to an end after 3.0 innings of work. Clayton picked up the loss allowing eight runs (7 earned) on 11 hits, he walked a batter as struck out a batter.
Richmond would only be able to plate one other run off Maxwell with a run in the second inning, however he would settle down to throw three scoreless innings to finish his night. Maxwell (2-0) threw 5.0 innings in the winning effort, allowing seven hits and two earned runs; he walked a batter and struck out four.
Chih-Hsien Chiang would connect with his second home run in as many nights, hitting a solo shot off Richmond's Andy Sisco in the fifth.
Trailing 9-2 in the sixth inning, Richmond would smack four straight doubles to score three runs off Portland reliever Daniel Turpin. The streak of doubles was snapped when Clay Timpner hit an infield single up the hole to Ray Chang. Unfortunately for Portland, Chang would throw the ball away allowing Darren Ford to score, cutting the Portland lead to 9-6.
Ryne Reynoso and Jason Rice would pick up Turpen and hold on for Maxwell's win. Reynoso bridged the gap to Rice with two perfect innings of work while striking out two.
Rice came on for the ninth, and struck out two en route to collecting his 11th save of the season
The Sea Dogs (54-59) and Flying Squirrels (55-58) will conclude their series Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM from Hadlock Field. Stephen Fife (6-3, 4.25) will take the ball for Portland, while Craig Westcott (3-1, 3.82) will make the start for Richmond in the rubber match.
