Sea Dogs, Phillies Suspended in Reading

Portland Sea Dogs News Release

(Reading, PA)- The Portland Sea Dogs trailed the Reading Phillies, 4-2 after five innings of play, but erased that deficit, and took a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth. As soon as Nate Spears singled to put the visitors in the lead, the rain began to fall at a substantial clip, forcing the game to be suspended.

The Sea Dogs got off to a nice start in the top of the first, wasting little time in taking the lead. After a single and a double play, Ray Chang kept the inning alive, doubling to the left-center field gap. Chang's stay at second base was short, as Luis Exposito also doubled, driving in Chang with the first run of the game.

In the second inning, Portland added to the lead. With one out, Jose Iglesias smacked a double over the left fielder's head, and proceeded to score on Chih-Hsien Chiang's double to right. Che-Hsuan Lin picked up a double in the third, giving the visitors a total of five, in a matter of just eleven plate appearances.

The Phillies got one run back in the bottom of the second, as John Suomi knocked in Matthew Rizzotti with a sacrifice fly to center. In the fourth inning, Reading came back to take the lead. Domonic Brown reached on an error by Anthony Rizzo, and moved to second base on a balk by Stephen Fife. Tagg Bozied doubled home Brown with the tying run, then scored the go-ahead run, when Rizzotti blooped a double over third base.

Reading added another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Bozied, but the lead did not last, as the Sea Dogs came back to tie the game, and eventually take a lead of their own against the Phillies' bullpen. Tyson Brummett tossed a perfect fifth inning in relief of Jason Anderson, but ran into trouble in the sixth. The reliever allowed two hits and one walk, leaving the game with two outs and the bases loaded. Two of those runners quickly scored off of Matt German, who walked both hitters he faced. John Ennis took over for German, and allowed a two-run single to Nate Spears, putting Portland ahead, 6-4.

At that point, the rain began to fall at a heavy clip, and after a lengthy delay, the game was ultimately suspended. The two teams are scheduled to finish the game on June 4th, when the Phillies visit Hadlock Field. The current situation has the Sea Dogs batting in the top of the sixth, leading 6-4, with runners on the corners.

The Sea Dogs will return home on Friday, as they begin a four-game series against the New Britain Rock Cats. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00, as Portland's Robert Coello (4-1, 3.10) takes on New Britain's Carlos Gutierrez (1-3, 3.73).
