Chesapeake Baysox News Release

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Bowie Baysox lost 10-9 to the Harrisburg Senators in extra innings on Thursday night, splitting their four-game series 2-2. Both teams were flexing the long ball as they hit three home runs apiece.

Starting pitcher Steve Johnson had difficulty finding the strike zone for his second consecutive outing, as he walked five batters en route to giving up five runs off three hits through four innings of work in the no-decision. Johnson has walked 11 batters in his last two games while striking out 10.

Reliever Mike Hinckley took the loss after walking two batters and giving up a walk-off base hit in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Matt Angle led off the top of the first inning with a double, and moved to third base on a throwing error by right fielder Edgardo Baez. He didn't stay there long as second baseman Ryan Adams launched a two-run home run to left field on the 1-1 pitch, his second home run of the season. Both of Adams' home runs came in the four-game set in Harrisburg, while Angle has now hit safely in 12 of the 13 games he has played in 2010.

The Senators wasted no time erasing the lead, as Johnson walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the first before Baez grounded a double down the left field line that plated Danny Espinosa and first baseman Chris Marrero to level the score at 2-2.

Center fielder Brad Coon put Harrisburg in the lead with a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the second, but the Baysox took it back in the top of the third inning. Angle led off with a bunt single down the third base line and was aboard for catcher Caleb Joseph's first-pitch home run to left field, his third of the season, that made it 4-3.

The pendulum swung back towards Harrisburg in the bottom half of the third. Johnson continued to struggle with his control, as he hit Jesus Valdez and walked designated hitter Marvin Lowrance. Both runners would score on second baseman Michael Martinez's two-out triple, that put the Senators on top 5-4. Harrisburg would tack on another run with Lowrance's solo home run off right-handed reliever Zach Clark in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Bowie shaved a run off the deficit with a pair of doubles by outfielders Tyler Henson and Jonathan Tucker to lead off the top of the sixth inning and pull the score back to 6-5.

The Senators continued to hammer Clark, with a single by Marrero to open the seventh before Lowrance drew a walk. Martinez smacked a three-run dinger, his first of the year, to put the home team up 9-5.

The Baysox mounted a late comeback that began with a pair of walks drawn by Angle and Joseph in the top of the eighth to put two aboard for Joel Guzman's 11th home run of the season that pulled Bowie within a run.

That run came in the top of the ninth inning, after Robbie Widlansky, Henson and shortstop Carlos Rojas loaded the bases with three base hits. Angle came to the plate with just one out and a chance to do some serious damage, but managed only a ground out to second base that plated Widlansky to tie the game.

The game slipped away from the Baysox in the bottom of the 10th inning. Left-hander Mike Hinckley took the mound and walked Coon and Espinosa to set up a walk-off hit by Valdez that went over Angle's head and sent Coon in from second as the Senators walked away 10-9 winners.

The Baysox are now in a three-way tie for third place with Erie and Harrisburg with 23-24 records all around. They are seven games behind Altoona for the Western Division lead, and three games behind Richmond for second place.

Bowie will have a chance to cover that ground this weekend, as their eight-day road trip moves to Richmond for four games against the Flying Squirrels. That series starts Friday at 7:05 p.m., with Pasadena, Md. native Chorye Spoone (2-5, 4.89 ERA) toeing the rubber against perhaps the top pitcher in the Eastern League, Richmond's Daryl Maday (7-0, 1.36).

The Baysox return to Bowie on Tuesday, June 1, for a six-game home stand against the Binghamton Mets and Erie SeaWolves. That weekend's games feature two of the most highly anticipated events of the year at Prince George's Stadium. Friday, June 4, is Legends of Wrestling Night, where fans can meet and get autographs from three-time WWF champion and New York Times bestselling author Mick Foley. That Saturday is Louie's Big Birthday Bash, as the Baysox lovable green mascot will celebrate his birthday in style with several of his mascot friends and a pre-game concert for kids by Milkshake. Louie's Kids Club members and their parents can buy tickets for $12 that include admission to the pre-game concert, a lower reserved ticket in Louie's Birthday Section, a wristband for free rides and games in Louie's Kids Park, birthday cake, and a goody bag.
