Sundogs Drop League-Leading Seventh One-Goal Loss Of Season, Fall 3-2 To Killer Bees

December 31, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Arizona Sundogs News Release

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - In front of a crowd numbering 3,766, the Arizona Sundogs closed out 2009 with their league-leading seventh one-goal loss of the season, falling 3-2 to the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Thursday night at Tim's Toyota Center.

The visiting Killer Bees jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play and opened a three-goal cushion just over six minutes into the second period on Nathan Ansell's eventual game-winner.

Arizona pulled back to within one on a pair of special teams goals by Linus Fagemo and Kyle Hood in the middle frame but fell short in the game's final minutes with Kyle McNulty off the ice in favor of an extra attacker.

Fagemo netted his ninth of the year and the Sundogs' third shorthanded marker of the season, skating in alone on Andy Franck before beating the netminder with a low wrist glove side midway through the second.

Kevin Gardner and Evan Shaw picked up assists on the play, finding Fagemo behind the Killer Bees' defense to cut the deficit to two.

Jon Landry, named to the 2010 CHL All-Star Team earlier in the day, found the back of the net on a delayed penalty to cut the Killer Bees' lead to one but referee Max Middendorf whistled the play dead and waived off the goal at the 14:32 mark.

Hood capitalized on the ensuing power play, stuffing a loose puck through Franck 18 seconds later from Landry after a scramble at the top of the goal crease.

Killer Bees leading scorer Jesse Bennefield added to his team-leading total with a goal and an assist in the first two periods of play, including the game's first tally 9:49 into the contest.

The first of three unanswered goals, Bennefield one-timed a Grant Goeckner-Zoeller centering feed past McNulty at the far post for his 18th goal of the year.

Sean Muncy made it 2-0 in favor of Rio Grande Valley with 2:53 to play in the opening frame, sending a wrist shot from the top of the near circle off the glove of McNulty and into the net.

With his club skating 5-on-4, Bennefield netted his second point of the game and helped to secure his club's 15th win of the year on Nathan Ansell's fourth of the season at 6:26 of the second period.

McNulty steered aside 20 shots in the loss while Franck stopped 26 of 28 to earn the win. Each club finished 1-for-3 with the man advantage Thursday.

The two teams face off again Saturday at 7:05pm at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. Tickets start at just $14 and are available by phone at 1-866-4-GET-TIX (1-866-443-8849), online at www.gettix.net and in person at the Tim's Toyota Center Box Office.
