
Portland finishes 4-4 on the trip â drop 3 of 5 to New Britain

(New Britain, CT) - The New Britain Rock Cats (16-20) used a 3-run fifth inning to beat the Portland Sea Dogs (18-18) 4-2 on Sunday afternoon in the series finale at New Britain Stadium. Portland dropped 3 of 5 to the Rock Cats in the series but finished their 8-game roadtrip at 4-4.
RHP Matt Fox (2-2) worked 5.1 IP on four hits, two runs (one earned), three walks and six strikeouts to pick up the win for the âCats. RHP Junichi Tazawa (4-3) took his first road loss of the season, yielding three runs on seven hits through five innings. RHP Anthony Slama converted his 7th save with a scoreless ninth inning.
RHP Rob Delaney relieved Fox and worked 2.2 scoreless frames on two hits and two strikeouts. The Sea Dogs left 10 runners on base and finished the game 1-for-12 with runners-in-scoring position.
New Britain had three hits through four innings before their 3-run fifth. RF Juan Portes led off with a triple and scored on SS Yancarlos Ortiz's RBI single. 2B Steve Tolleson gave the âCats a 2-1 advantage with a triple to right field and scored on RF Rene Tosoni's run-scoring double. Portland responded in the top of the sixth inning, scoring a run on Juan Apodaca's fielder's choice.
The Sea Dogs scored the game's first run on great base running by 2B Ryan Khoury. LF Aaron Bates hit into a fielder's choice but the throw from 2B Tolleson trickled off the first baseman's glove, enabling Khoury to score.
Tazawa was brilliant in the early innings, escaping jams in the second and fourth innings. The righty fanned the side in the second inning after a lead-off triple by 3B Danny Valencia. In the fourth inning the âCats had runners at first and third but Tazawa struck 1B Erick Lis and LF Matt Moses to halt the rally.
LHP Dustin Richardson worked two innings for Portland, allowing a run in the seventh inning on a 2-out RBI double by DH Brian Dinkelman.
Portland has a scheduled off day on Monday and kicks off a 7-game homestand on Tuesday night against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats beginning at 6:00 PM.
