
Defenders Split Double Header

NORWICH, CT- The Defenders (20-17) and Fisher Cats (21-17) split a double header Sunday afternoon at Dodd Stadium as they resumed action from yesterday's suspended game due to fog. Connecticut took game one, 1-0 and New Hampshire claimed game two by the final of 8-2.
Madison Bumgarner (2-0) was spectacular in his Dodd Stadium debut as he silenced the Fisher Cats in six scoreless innings, allowed one hit, walked three and struck out a season high nine batters in route to his second consecutive win. A DH-Eddy Martinez-Esteve RBI double in the bottom of the first inning before the game got suspended Saturday night held up as Connecticut cruised to the victory.
Fisher Cat's starter, RHP-Casey Janssen made a MLB rehabilitation start in just his second game in double-A. Janssen hurled 5.2 scoreless innings, gave up five hits, walked two and struck out three in the no decision. Starter RHP-Randy Boone (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season after tossing just one inning, allowing one earned run off of two hits.
In game two, the roles were reversed as the Fisher Cats got out to an early 5-0 lead and never looked back as they touched up spot starter, RHP-Dan Griffin (1-3). Griffin never got out of the first as he rendered all five earned runs off of six hits and walked one in the loss.
New Hampshire added three more runs in the second inning to inflate the score to 8-0.
Connecticut finally struck the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI double by 1B-Brett Pill to drive in 2B-Brock Bond who leadoff with a single. The Defenders added one more in the in the final frame when Bond plated DH-Tyler LaTorre who drew a two out walk.
Rei Gonzalez (2-1) picked up his second win of the season for the Fisher Cats firing six solid innings, giving up one earned run off of five hits and striking out a season high eight batters.
