Binghamton sweeps double-header from Trenton

(Binghamton, NY)- Binghamton Starting Pitcher Ryan Coultas tossed 5 1/3 innings to lead the Mets to a 2-1 win over the Thunder in the first game of a double-header on Sunday afternoon from NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton, NY. Binghamton took the second game 4-3 by scoring the tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning, and the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Trenton First baseman Jorge Vazquez had three RBI, including a two-run home run, in the second game of the double-header.

In the first game, Trenton (16-18) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Shortstop Eduardo Nunez and Centerfielder Seth Fortenberry drew back-to-back walks to start the game off of Coultas. With two outs, Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci delivered an RBI single to plate Nunez with the first run of the game. Binghamton would score two runs off of Thunder Starting Pitcher Ivan Nova in the fourth inning to take the lead. Left fielder D.J. Wabick connected on a sacrifice fly RBI to tie the game at 1-1. With two outs, Shortstop Jose Coronado delivered the go-ahead RBI single to give Binghamton the lead. Coultas (3-1) went 5 1/3 innings and scattered four hits and one run. Binghamton Reliever Julio De La Cruz came on for Coultas and retired the final five batters for his third save of the season. Nova (2-3) allowed five hits and two runs (one earned) in four innings for the loss. Thunder Reliever Kanekoa Texeira pitched two shutout innings in relief of Nova. Vazquez had two doubles in the loss for the Thunder.

In the second game, Trenton scored two runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead off of Binghamton Starting Pitcher Tobi Stoner. Center fielder Colin Curtis singled with one out for Trenton's first hit of the game. Vazquez followed with a two-run opposite field home run to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead. The home run was Vazquez's sixth of the season (third against Binghamton). The Thunder tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning. Curtis singled to start the inning, and Vazquez followed with an RBI double to make it 3-1. Vazquez had five extra-base hits in the double-header, and went 3 x 4 with three RBI in the second game. Trenton Starting Pitcher Jason Stephens retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced, and went on to toss five solid innings. He yielded only one hit and run. Stoner allowed five hits and three runs in 5 1/3 innings for a no-decision. Binghamton (17-18) cut the Trenton lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Coronado. The Mets tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk by Center fielder Carl Loadenthal. Binghamton scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning off of Thunder Reliever Josh Schmidt (3-1). With Designated Hitter Josh Thole on second base, and Center fielder Emmanuel Garcia on first base with nobody out, First baseman Lucas Duda delivered the game winning single off of Schmidt. Binghamton Reliever Stephen Clyne earned the win in relief by going 2 2/3 shutout innings.

After an off day on Monday, Trenton returns to Waterfront Park on Tuesday to start a three-game series against the Akron Aeros (Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians). LHP Wilkin De La Rosa (1-0, 2.45) will start for Trenton against Akron RHP Josh Tomlin (4-1, 3.82). Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m.
