Hamburger Beefs Up Clinton Bullpen

August 26, 2008 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - In a trade that sent veteran reliever Eddie Guardado back to the Minnesota Twins, the Texas Rangers acquired the Appalachian League's "Closer of the Year", right-hander Mark Hamburger. His minor-league destination: the Clinton bullpen.

Hamburger, 21, spent his entire 2008 season with Elizabethton of the rookie Appalachian League, going 1-2 with a 4.17 ERA and 13 saves in 27 games. He allowed opponents to hit .250, walking 13 while striking out 40 and gave up just two home runs.

A native of Shoreview, Minnesota, Hamburger went undrafted out of Mesabi Range Community College in 2007 despite a stellar college career. He went 11-0 with a 0.65 ERA with Mesabi in 2006, but it wasn't until an open tryout at the Metrodome that the Twins finally signed him.

Once in the system with the Gulf Coast League Twins, Hamburger went 2-1 with a 1.20 ERA in eight relief outings, walking four while striking out 12.

To make room for Hamburger (#45), left-hander Ryan Turner has been sent to the AZL roster. The move leaves the LumberKings with 25 active players, three on the disabled list.
