Chesapeake Baysox News Release

(Bowie, MD) - The Baysox were fueled by another strong outing from starter David Hernandez to go along with a six-RBI night from Matt Wieters to take their second straight from the Rock Cats, 10-1 Friday night. Hernandez lasted 5.2 innings, allowing just a run on four hits while striking out eight batters on the way to his seventh victory of the year.

Hernandez battled with New Britain starter Ryan Mullins for four and a half scoreless innings before the Baysox broke through in the bottom of the fifth. Blake Davis led off with a walk and Jonathan Tucker laced a double into the gap in right-center to put men on second and third. The Rock Cats brought the infield in and Carlos Rojas lashed a base hit under the glove of the diving Felix Molina at short, bringing both runners in to score. Nolan Reimold hit a fly ball to right field for the first out before Matt Wieters hit a towering shot over the wall in right for a two-run opposite field homerun to give the Baysox a 4-0 lead.

The Rock Cats finally got to Hernandez in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Brock Peterson drew an eight-pitch walk and David Winfree crushed a triple to right field to score Peterson and cut the Bowie lead to 4-1.

Hernandez took some positives and some negatives out of the start, "I felt good, I had good command of my fastball today. That's what I was using to go after the hitters out there, just try to make them put it in play or swing at it and it worked out tonight. Some of the batters kept fouling pitches off so eventually they're going to put it in play or I'll walk them. Tonight I didn't finish off as many as I would have liked."

Wieters caught Hernandez and has now had a number of chances to see his repertoire. As a catcher, he has been very impressed, "David's got electric stuff. When he's down in the zone and using all three of his pitches he's gonna be tough on any night. You see the hitters going down and they're just baffled sometimes, shaking their heads. Like I said, he's got electric stuff and he can go out and dominate any night."

The Baysox pummeled the New Britain bullpen for six more runs in their next two turns at bat. Jonathan Tucker got hit by pitch to lead off the bottom of the seventh and Carlos Rojas executed a perfect hit-and-run, grounding a single through the hole at short to move Tucker to third. Nolan Reimold struck out for the first out of the inning but Matt Wieters crushed his second homerun of the game. This one was a three-run shot that came from the left side of the plate and made the score 7-1 Bowie.

Mike Rodriguez picked up a one-out single in the bottom of the eight and Blake Davis hit a ground ball to first base that was bobbled for an error to put men on first and second. Tucker hit a single up the middle to load the bases and Rojas drove Rodriguez in with a walk. Nolan Reimold brought Davis in when he was hit by pitch and Matt Wieters completed his productive day with a sacrifice fly to deep left field, driving in Tucker for his sixth RBI and giving the Baysox a 10-1 lead.

Wieters was pleased with his production, but even happier that it helped the team to a victory, "It's always good to get a nice win and put a couple good swings on pitches with guys in scoring position. We got a great outing from David tonight, we needed for him to go deep and he threw well for us and then the bullpen finished it out. Today was a good day for me, it's always nice to get a few balls to carry out of the park, but tomorrow's a new day so I have to focus on that."

Wilfredo Perez and Rommie Lewis combined to finish the Rock Cats off for Hernandez. Perez worked 2.1 shutout innings, allowing just one hit, and Lewis worked a perfect ninth inning to seal the deal.

With the victory, the Baysox improve to 70-51, second place in the Southern Division, just one game behind Akron. The Baysox look to take three in a row from New Britain Saturday night when RHP Chris Tillman (7-3, 3.63 ERA) goes up against Rock Cats RHP Yohan Pino (4-5, 5.04 ERA).

On Saturday, come celebrate Saturday Night Live Night with the Baysox. Dress as your favorite SNL character and help Baysox staff members pay tribute to America's favorite sketch comedy show! Sunday night is Faith Night at Prince George's Stadium and will feature a pregame concert by New Method and Fairgreen. The concert will go from 4-5 p.m. and anyone with a ticket to the game will be admitted in to the concert.

The Bowie Baysox are out to Beat The Streaks in their 16th season as the "AA" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. The Baysox have not reached the postseason since 1997 and have never reached the Eastern League Championship. Playoff tickets are available beginning August 12th; tickets for all remaining regular season games are available on www.baysox.com or by calling the box office at (301) 464-4865.
